Torchwood's John Barrowman on the Jack-Ianto relationship, the new Doctor

john barrowman torchwoodLike I mentioned earlier today on SciFi Squad, Torchwood: Children of Earth finally makes its U.S. premiere tonight with a gripping first hour on BBC America. We'll be covering the five-part miniseries through Friday with news and daily episode reviews.

Torchwood's own Captain Jack Harkness, John Barrowman, talked to Pop Candy's Whitney Matheson recently. The interview is a good read with Barrowman talking about the show, his career, his love of sci-fi (he's a Space: 1999 fan!) and his thoughts on the new Doctor Who, Matt Smith. Here are some highlights:

When asked which Torchwood agent is the best kisser, Barrowman responded: "It depends how you're looking at it, because Jack kisses them in different ways. Jack will kiss Ianto very passionately ... He would kiss Gwen on the cheek, but with a little bit of trepidation, because there's almost a sensuality there that he doesn't want to go to. And with Toshiko, it's more of a kind of a playful, pecky kiss. So I'd still have to say Ianto's the best kisser."

Honestly, I didn't expect him to say anything different. But I did find his next comment about the Jack-Ianto relationship quite surprising: "Most women love that relationship. Loads of women write to me all the time saying how much they love the fact that they've gone the Ianto-Jack route rather than the Gwen-Jack route."

I have to agree with Barrowman's female fans. After catching the first hour of Children of Earth, I'm really looking forward to watching the boys' relationship develop. I love that it makes life a little more challenging, but even more rewarding, for the characters, and it makes them seem more vulnerable.

And does Captain Jack get on with the new Doctor, Matt Smith?

"... We talked for a little while. He seems really energetic about being the new Doctor, really gung ho for it all. When he got up and left the table, I turned to the rest of the publicists and said, 'I think I just had an affair on David.'"

Check out the full interview and make sure to catch the two Torchwood specials airing before and after tonight's premiere (or watch video interviews and previews online at BBC America).
