NBC Considered $10 Million Jackson Special for Leno's Premiere Week & More TV News

The Jay Leno ShowNBC wanted to pay a whopping $10 million to air a Michael Jackson memorial special, possibly to air during the week of 'The Jay Leno Show''s inaugural week.

Also in the news: 'Oprah''s ratings are down, while Jennie Garth and Brooke Burns book roles on two CW remakes.

A plan was also considered to air the two-hour special sometime during 'The Jay Leno Show''s premiere week, possibly right before 'Leno''s Sept. 14 kick-off. Oprah Winfrey'The Oprah Winfrey Show' hit a ratings low point earlier this month, averaging a measly 3.2 household rating for the week ending July 5. That marks the show's worst performance since its 1983 debut, although it admittedly aired repeats amidst coverage of Wimbledon and Michael Jackson's death. ABC has acquired 'Shaq Vs.,' a new reality competition series starring basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal. The show, premiering Aug. 18 at 9PM, will track O'Neal as he competes in swimming, football and other sports against athletes like Michael Phelps and Ben Roethlisberger. [Variety]

Syfy has unveiled its fall 2009 premiere schedule. Highlights include the two-hour series premiere of 'Stargate Universe' (Fri., Oct. 2, 9PM), the return of 'Scare Tactics' (Tue., Oct. 6, 9PM) and the telepic 'Open Graves' (Sept. 9), co-starring 'Dollhouse''s Eliza Dushku. [Variety]
