Samuel L. Jackson could have kicked the mother*#&ing s#*% out of sports broadcasting

Samuel L. Jackson hosting The EspysThe thought of having to sit through another cable network awards show makes my Golden Globes shrivel.

It's nothing but a million-dollar idea for getting some useless ink in what's left of the local papers and making a quick buck off the cell texting charges by getting people to vote for awards that mean nothing. It's the television equivalent of the participation medals you got in elementary school for not dying during the mile run.

Thanks to Samuel L. Jackson's work as the host of the recent ESPY Awards, I will sit through whatever awards show he hosts from now on. I don't care if the National Sewage Treatment Board of America hires him to host their annual "Sewey" awards.

Not every joke written for the host worked. The Twitter bits didn't really register a laugh in me at all and only seemed geared towards giving the attendees a little "in-joke" roasting, but Jackson's comedy bits actually got me to sit down in front of the TV and watch the show without even lunging for the remote. That's quite an accomplishment. Usually it takes a "Celebrity Jeopardy!" SNL sketch or a phone sex commercial to keep me from doing that.

The show has attempted to gear it down some towards less fanatic sports fans, but doesn't want to completely alienate their core audience. The problem is the majority of the jokes are really geared towards hardcore sports fans who arrange their wives' pregnancies around fantasy football seasons and Wimbledon.

Jackson makes the perfect host because he brings a true sports fan's energy to the show and the sketches that are written for him. The jokes don't always work, but his performances save the sketch from being a total wash and he really hit a homer this year (yes, I got paid to write that). The best goes to this interesting retrospective of Jackson's pseudo-life as a sportscaster in which Jackson and SCTV alum Eugene Levy team for their funniest on-screen performance since The Man.

It's so hilarious that I wish it was true. For once, someone at ESPN could have made Bobby Knight wet his pants instead of the other way around.

"Hosting" is an understatement. From what I saw, they handed out a few sports awards at the Samuel L. Jackson Show. It was tiring, but I will say I liked the video clip of him and Justin Timberlake golfing.
