Why the Joan Rivers Roast should be tighter and funnier than her current facelift

Joan RiversThe traditional comedy roast has been hijacked by the cable networks and reproduced with more disappointing results than a sperm bank run by General Motors.

Comedy Central has done the best job for the most part while others like A&E's extremely mismanaged Gene Simmons Roast made for lower quality television are as horrific as those painfully dated Dean Martin's Roasts that are sold on infomercials in the wee small hours of the morning.

The secret to doing a good roast isn't really that much of a secret: hire people who are actually paid to be funny. That's why the Roast of Joan Rivers could be the best one yet.

The Los Angeles Times talked to Rivers on the red carpet about the roasters and she revealed the producers originally invited Donald Trump to take a turn of the spit, but eventually turned it down because he's not a comedian, if you don't count his hair.

The roaster of roasters includes such sturdy funny people as Carl Reiner, Kathy Griffin, Brad Garrett, Greg Giraldo and roastmaster general Jeffrey Ross. There isn't a token serious guy or gal in the bunch and that should make for an entertaining evening. Can you imagine if the Donald actually fired up his golden jet and tried to make a serious go at being funny at the Joan Rivers Roast? How could he be funny when every serious speech he makes becomes so unintentionally funny?

Anyone who doesn't do jokes for a living can really bring down a roast. Unless they are naturally funny or their very presence makes their appearance strangely funny, they always feel as if they are reading jokes off of a teleprompter or something that someone else wrote for them. Leave the roasting to the people who know how to keep the coals burning.

I've heard bits and pieces on the Howard Stern Show. They sent Robin and Artie Lange to roast her. Jeffrey Ross was funny as usual

I heard Robin. She was good for a novice.
