Grey's Anatomy update: past guest stars return, funeral in the works, etc.

Grey's Anatomy
Shooting of Season 6 of Grey's Anatomy has already begun which means only one thing: spoilers are leaking to the web!

Are Izzie and George dead of alive? Will Meredith be pregnant since actress Ellen Pompeo is? Who is returning to the show? Are they introducing new characters? These questions and more are answered in this Grey's Anatomy update!

Warning! Spoilers coming up.

Let's deal with the fates of George and Izzie. The funeral I hint for in the title of this post is for George. The actor asked to be released of his contract and ABC as well as the show agreed. Shonda Rhimes would have liked to have the Season 6 premiere be about what happened between the time George left Seattle Grace and his coming back as a disfigured and highly injured patient. Sadly, T.R. Knight decided not to return at all. He believes that the best send-off for his character was to see him in that elevator at the end of the season finale. So no more George for us... maybe in flashbacks using old footage but nothing new.

As for Izzie, she will live. Katherine Heigl said over and over again how she was displeased with her story lines as of late. However, last season offered great material for Heigl to act -- well, maybe except those "I'm having sex with my dead fiancé" scenes -- which helped patch things between Heigl and the show.

Ellen Pompeo is pregnant, but Meredith is not. Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly that she has a "lovely story" in store for Meredith to allow for some time off the show for Pompeo. Rhimes also confirms that we will get a bunch of stand-alone episodes to help fill the void, which will also help the show's powers that be know if the show can work without some of its cast since "eventually, everybody is going to leave the show," as Rhimes put it.

X-Files Mitch Pileggi will reprise his role as a member of the hospital's board of directors in the season premiere. It wouldn't be surprising that his guest appearance has something to do with George's death. Amy Madigan will come back as one of Seattle Grace's shrinks in the second hour of the two-hour premiere. Is she coming back to help the staff cope with George's death? Or is Owen still have problems with his PTSD?

The show will add at least three new interns who have yet to be cast. Martha Plimpton will appear in multiple episodes starting with the premiere where she'll play the mother of a patient.

Are you satisfied with George's last scene? Would you have preferred the actor agreed to return to tell what happened to George the day he died? Are you happy Izzie returns? Would you have preferred Meredith be pregnant instead of having the show try to hide her belly and then send her away so Pompeo can have time off?

I'm disappointed about the Mcbaby,I think it could be a very interesting story line, and besides they're both getting older so lets not wait to long. Mer and der have taked about having kids together. Also the fans want a real legal wedding, not that sham of post it notes.

I know that GA is a soap... but 4% chance to live, and Izzie just so happens to be in that 4%? Bleh. Unless the season start off leaves me feeling that the season finale does, I'm done with this show.

You're absolutely right Alicia. It's totally unrealistic and unbelievable. Just because the actress in the part hints that she's going to live doesn't mean she's going to. For all anyone knows, she's probably at the funeral as a ghost. TPTB are comfortable making the show into a paranormal joke anyway.

By the looks of things.. Even if Katherine Heigl wants to stay, I have a feeling they might fire her or something.. because her relationship with ABC really isnt great, right? so Izzie's probably gonna die sooner or later.. I completely agree though...I think Grey's is becoming more soap-y these days (compared to the beginning anyway..)

Yes, Grey's Anatomy without Meredith for a few episodes. You can't blame them since the actress needs some time after she delivers her baby.

I'm quite happy with how George's final scenes played out. Very dramatic, very gut-wrenching, with unanswered questions of "what does it all mean" going unanswered. Nothing more needs to be shown.

As for Ellen's pregnancy, on one hand I'm glad they're not working it into the show. An actor is someone who pretends to be someone else, not a person who pretends to play themself (though now that I think about it, both sentiments reflect a percentage of Hollywood actors these days.)

On the other hand, working Ellen's pregnancy in allows Meredith to mirror her Ellis Grey's life. It would be cool to compare how Meredith handled having kids in her career versus how her mother, Ellis Grey handled it--especially if they work in some flashbacks where we can see Meredith as a baby/toddler, etc.

This could be doubly powerful since Bailey is going through that same process right now of having a child when her career is in high gear. That could make for some good bonding scenes between the two of them (or maybe serious moments of conflict between the two of them, depending on the issue.

Going the later route, however, means really focusing the show on Meredith (which I thought was the point of the show, since it's called Grey's Anatomy), so that isn't likely to happen.
