ABC set to pick up Alyssa Milano comedy for midseason

by Mike Moody, posted Aug 4th 2009 2:01PM
alyssa milanoAlyssa Milano's career resurgence continues (or begins, it depends on your perspective, I guess). ABC is expected to order 13 episodes of Romantically Challenged, a sitcom about a thirtysomething man dealing with his new girlfriend (Milano) and his needy best friend. If picked up, the series will air midseason on ABC, around the same time the network plans to premiere three dramas, Happy Town, V, and The Deep End.

This news comes almost a year after the network dumped Milano's last shot at a sitcom, Single With Parents. Romantically Challenged almost ended up on ABC's fall schedule, reportedly due to the strong buzz surrounding Milano's performance. But the network decided to push it back, presumably to make room for its other new comedies, including Bill Lawrence's Cougar Town and Hank, starring Kelsey Grammer.

Milano hasn't had a regular TV gig since Charmed ended in 2006, but she had a memorable arc last year on the recently cancelled My Name is Earl. The actress also landed a voiceover gig on the hugely popular Ghostbusters video game, released earlier this year, and the rumor is she'll be starring as a female ghostbuster in Ghostbusters 3.

It's great to see Milano climbing her way back to the spotlight. (Now what's up with her former Who's the Boss co-star Danny Pintauro?)

Alyssa Milano is a class act. I'm looking forward to her new show.

It looks like ABC's backup plan if the sitcom block works out is to replace failing sitcoms with other sitcoms, instead of programming shows like LOST and V in those valuable Wednesday time slots.

ABC's comedy nights were traditionally Tuesday and Friday. Nowadays, Tuesday needs to make room for the Dancing With The Stars results show and Friday is, well, Friday.

You'd think that maybe if half the shows don't work, they can cut it down to an hour block at 8, LOST at 9 and Eastwick or V or Flash Forward at 10.

For the 3rd and final year, the biggest mystery at ABC is when and where we will they schedule LOST?

I have to say, Milano is a pretty good actress and does comedy rather well. Charmed wasn't exactly high art but it had moments of fun and Milano was good in it. I'll be interested to see what this series is like.
