Dan Patrick brings radio to TV

by Allison Waldman, posted Aug 5th 2009 10:30AM

If you like sports talk in the afternoon and get bored with the countless reruns of breaking news on ESPN's myriad channels, here's some good news. Dan Patrick is back on the air. In daytime, that is, and not on the worldwide leader in sports. Dan Patrick's radio show began simulcasting on DirecTV this week, bringing the entire DP team and their studio into view.

Broadcasting a radio show on TV is not new, of course. Don Imus did it for years on MSNBC until he put his foot so far in his mouth that he was kicked off the network. And Mike Francesca has a daily radio talk show airing on the Yes network. The idea of watching someone with a microphone in his face and earphones on is not radical.

Still, some claim it's not good TV. I think the quality of this endeavor will have little to do with broadcasting from a radio base. Dan Patrick is one of the more engaging and charming sports guys in media. Getting the chance to click on DirecTV's 101 channel and listen to him is a good thing.

I checked him out today and, believe me, I'll be back for more, especially since DP won't have the constraints of ESPN management squelching his thoughts.

It's like every other simucast sports talk show in that he spent 85% of the time talking Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets and occasionally Red Sox. If I want New York centric sports talk, I'll watch ESPN.

Mike & Mike (my favorite sports radio show) also simulcast on espn2 everyday. Collin Cowherd (used to like him, don't as much anymore) is on espnU. But like you said I'm sure in part they're constrained by espn so it's nice to get someone who isn't.

When DP announced he was going to the 101 channel, I was particularly interested in their "Look Ins" they said they'd be doing. But so far, I'm not that impressed. I thought they'd be longer then they are and natural. To me, they feel staged. Today they were a bit better, but yesterday they were pretty bad. Hopefully we'll get a true look in like PTI does.
