America's Got Talent: Five selected for Top 20
(S04E14) Last night, twelve acts battled it out for your votes. Who will make it through to the semi-finals? We found out the first five tonight. But first, there was a big discussion about whether the last basket of Acrodunk actually went in last night. Piers said it didn't, and Sharon bet him $500 that it did. After the slo-mo replay, it was determined that it DID go in, and now Piers owes Sharon $500. Let's hope it goes to charity. Maybe a basketball camp for kids or something.
Nick introduced the acts, and I must say, there's quite a variety this season. I'm filling in for Isabelle on this review, and it's fun to see such a diverse group competing for the top prize.
Acrodunk and Breaksk8 were up first. The act going to the semi-finals and moving one step closer to the million dollars is ... Acrodunk. It seems a little weird to me, because I wonder if they'll be able to sustain a Vegas show. Can they dunk for a couple of hours? We'll see. One of the guys said they're "excited to show America that they're more than your average half-time show." Piers said there's a real "sense of danger" to the act, but now it gets serious.
Former America's Got Talent winner Terry Fator made an appearance on the show, bringing assorted characters with him, including a singer who sings just like Aaron Neville and a rocker sporting a mullet. Nick called Fator "the most successful reality show winner of all time," and I guess signing a $100 million Las Vegas contract definitely puts him in the successful category. He really is super-talented, with a cool combo of music, comedy and ventriloquism. And guess what? If you can't make it to Vegas to see the show in person, you can buy it on DVD soon.
Next up was Lake Houston Dance, Drew Thomas Magic and Manuela Horn. America voted, and the next act going home is Lake Houston Dance. You know, they're cute as all get-out, but I can't really see them in Vegas.
The act moving forward in the competition is Drew Thomas Magic. That makes total sense to me. I pretty much LOVE his act. And Manuela Horn? A little creepy, like she possibly belongs in an episode of The Twilight Zone.
Kevin Skinner and Mosaic stepped forward next. The next act moving forward is Kevin Skinner, which doesn't surprise me. Mosaic is great, though, and the guys were really nice about losing, saying how great it was to have gotten this far in the competition. The Hoff agreed with America, saying Kevin is "just pure, unadulterated raw talent."
The super-hot performer -- and what America's been waiting for -- came onstage next. Nick's wife, Mariah Carey, sang her new hit, "Obsessed" (although from what I understand, she actually taped the performance, so it wasn't exactly live.) Still, her body is rockin', and so are her shoes -- although I'd be terrified of falling off of them and breaking an ankle. I guess she's probably used to wearing those skyscrapers by now. I'm a little meh on the song, although it got better when she hit some high notes at the end.
Nick was pretty funny, saying the song was about HIM. They're such a cute couple, flirting and giving each other moon-eyes, and then she grabbed his ass as they were leaving the stage. Cute! Cynical me says they'll probably split up next month.
Next up were The Platt Brothers, The Diva League, and Grandma Lee. It's funny seeing such a diverse group on stage, with Grandma Lee standing next to the drag queens. After America's vote, the next act to go home is The Platt Brothers.
But somebody still has to go home -- and the act moving forward and moving one step closer to the million dollars is Grandma Lee! Awww, she is such a cutie. I would love to see her go all the way.
The last two acts to come out are Arcadian Broad and Thia Megia. But in this case, the act moving forward is decided by the judges. Piers said his vote goes with Thia, because she's progressed the most in the competition. Sharon said that while they both represent the youth of America, her vote is for Arcadian. The Hoff said the show is about talent and diversity, which is why his vote goes to Arcadian. That means Arcadian Broad is moving forward and Thia Megia is going home.
So to recap, the acts moving forward are Arcadian Broad, Acrodunk, Drew Thomas Magic, Kevin Skinner, and Grandma Lee. Are the right acts moving forward? Or did one of your favorites end up going home?
