So You Think You Can Dance: Top 4 Perform

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 6th 2009 2:46AM
So You Think You Can Dance
(S05E22)
The judges were so excited about the final four that they even critiqued the solos. I was glad to see Adam Shankman on the panel as he's one of the few guest judges who truly offers quality criticism to the dancers. Surprisingly, hip-hop was completely absent tonight, but there were some amazing performances. And ballroom came on strong!

GROUP

"Boys Boys Boys," Lady Gaga (Pop-Jazz, Wade Robson)
That was cute. It was a little more mellow than I expected, but I do believe that every man out there with a cheerleader thing just passed out. It was a hot and fun little high school number, and nobody stood out in a negative way so I'll give them that. A feel good opening for sure.

COUPLES

Jeanine & Evan
"Heartbreaker," MSTRKRFT f. John Legend (Jazz, Sonya Tayeh)

Sonya painted a powerful representation of a man pining after a woman who wants nothing to do with him. There were some amazing lifts and interactions in that. Perfect passion, performance and portrayal.

Kayla & Brandon
"Bye Bye Love," All That Jazz (Broadway, Tyce Diorio)
I loved the style of this piece as it opened, but as it went on, something seemed a little off. Maybe the choreography was stilted in the beginning. I still think they're both amazing, and there were some great moments, but I wasn't as in love with it as the judges.

Brandon & Evan
"Nasty," Janet Jackson (Pop-Jazz, Laurie Ann Gibson)

Oh no! Dancing next to Brandon exposed Evan as someone who's just not fighting as hard. Maybe he's tired? If it was a battle, Brandon dominated that one from the first note.

Jeanine & Kayla
"The Four Sections: IV (Full Orchestra)," Steve Reich (Contemporary, Mia Michaels)

That may have been a bit too weird for me. I don't think the stripping of the skirts worked as well as Mia was hoping. The girls danced extremely well, but the gimmick overwhelmed the piece a bit more than I would have liked.

Kayla & Evan
"T.R.O.U.B.L.E.," Travis Tritt (Jive, Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin)

I'm not sure how they did it, but Kayla and Evan made that jive boring. We know Kayla has wonderful lines, but Evan just seems to have run out of steam. That last spin was kind of a disaster and ... yeah, there really isn't anything more to say.

Jeanine & Brandon
"Tetsujin," The Matrix Revolutions (Paso Doble, Louis Van Amstel)

That's how you maintain intensity from beginning to end. But where did all the lifts go? It was a great way to end the dance portion of the series. That was an amazing piece of dance that just solidified their place as the top two dancers for this kid.

SOLOS

Brandon Bryant - "Dies Irae," Karl Jenkins

What a powerful solo. It seemed like he was out for blood with the energy. If only he'd worn something less odd.

Jeanine Mason - "Por una Cabeza," The Tango Project
It's so hard to wow an audience in her style, but I thought she brought an appreciated sultriness to it. She managed to pull out some impressive tricks.

Evan Kasprzak - "The Best Is Yet to Come," Michael Bublé
I love what Evan brings that is unique to the show. He didn't do anything outstanding over solos we've seen from him before.

Kayla Radomski - "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," Eurythmics
I would have liked to see her use more of the stage. It seemed she was just getting started when it ended, but it was elegant and smooth.

SUMMARY

The judges seem to have made their choices. Fourth place: Evan. Third place: Kayla. Second place: Jeanine. First place: Brandon. It'll be interesting to see if America agrees with them. I kind of think I do, though Evan's overwhelming popularity may just push him forward. After all, it is "America's Favorite Dancer" and not "America's Most Technically Proficient Dancer."

I think the judges have not been too complimentary towards Evan. They have told him that he's good at his style, but they always criticize him for this, that or the other. I think he is at a disadvantage because his style is more smooth (think Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly) and not the competition style (look at what I can do!) that the other 3 in the top 4 are in. That is partly why he always looks like he's not putting much effort in.

Kayla's technique is good - she has great extension, and good control. I don't notice her arms flailing.

There's so much talk about personality - it's all hogwash. We don't know what these kids (and yes, I'm going to call them kids) are like in real life. What personality they display on tv could all be an act. It's not like America's Next Top Model where we can see the crazies come out.

I will have to say this about Evan, though - being on SYTYCD, knowing that everyone else is of the "ooh, watch me!" style (whether it's contemporary or ballroom), you have to adapt that same mentality if you don't want to be outdanced by others. Be aggressive when the choreography calls for it (which is probably 75% of the time), even if it's totally not the way you would normally dance. Evan's not a bad dancer - he just wasn't able to adapt to the different, flashier styles.

Does anyone else think that last night episode was completly biast? The judges knew from the start that they were going to make a big deal about jeanine and brandon's performance. That's why they were the ones that went last. the performers don't pick when they get to perform, the producers do.

And the reason Janette went home was because that week the judges made a huge deal about Melissa and Ade's contemporary routine and Jeanine and Brandon's pop jazz/hip hop which was not good. I think Evan is a great dancer but when Janette and him did the Rumba they accidentally spotlighted Evan too much and said how hes grown alot, all they said about Janette was that she was the favorite...even though thats a great comment the public only remembers the judges speaking about Evan for the 20 extra seconds.

And the choreographey this year lacks thought and artistic ability. Mia Michaels only did about 3-4 duet routines this year? (correct me if im wrong) but shes loosing her touch this year. The kayla and jeanine routine was not very good. I give her props on the addiction routine though.

Im not really liking any of the Sonya routines either. They all have the same type of quality (like neon spandex and 80s pop/techno music). I really enjoyed Kayla and Kupono's blue foundation routine which actually put them in the bottom 3.

The finale in general was pretty dissapointing, (no hip hop!). The jive was pretty embarressing to watch and the paso double was just some intense music and the judges going crazy for them. The "nasty" routine with brandon and evan was a dissapointment, the new choreographer Laurie Ann gibson (who was one on making the band) is a terrible choreographer.

I agree about Melissa and Ade. The judges went nuts over their dance (as if breast cancer is a really controversial issue that gets no attention) and so Melissa stayed even though Janette was much better than she was. I still think Kayla and Janine are better than Janette, but I wish Janette had the chance to fight one more week.

Evan deserves all the credit that's due.

So to his credit, let me add that it was his fault Janette got cut. His shortcomings on the ridiculous Rumba made it comical to watch. Both his technique and personality were awful, and he couldn't support Janette's even when performing a Latin dance for chris'sakes!

His lack of presence (which has ALWAYS been his problem) was too much for Janette to overcome, which allowed Janine to steal Janette's spot (though I'm not dissin' Jeanine, she played it fair and square.)

In my opinion the judges attitudes were very clear; they are judging Evan harshly because he became a Juggernaut early on that cost one of the best dancers (Janette) the spot that she deserved, and the only way they could level the playing field so Evan didn't just walk off with the "Best Dancer" title was to keep pumping up Kayla and Brandon.

That is why Mia Michaels "suddenly" made a complete 180 degree turn in her opinion on Brandon [because only Brandon could really steal the win--he has technique and personality in his performance at all times (just like Janette!!!)]

I think it would be great if, as a reward for making it to the finals, the dancers got some choice as to the choreographer they'd like to work with. Plus, it could be seen as a compliment to the choreographers. Let's face it, some of the routines this year were not very good and some good dancers were hurt by the weak routines.

It sickens me how so many people are favoring Evan. Yes he's a short cute guy. Good for him; but is he a dancer? No. I think it will be absolutely ridiculous if he wins because the other 3 blow him out of the water. I am actual dancer so I know what I'm talking about. I hope America isn't stupid like they have been all season. Brandon, Kayla, or Jeanine must win.

Wow! So because you say you are a dancer we should just take your word as gospel? Even after you imply that ANYONE that has voted for Evan is stupid? you might not like him...but yes, he does DANCE. And frankly, I would think a dancer, as you claim to be, would know that.

His style is Broadway, are you saying Tyce is not a dancer as well? Not to mention any of the other choreographer's that do Broadway numbers?

Even though I agree that the other 3 are more proficient dancers overall than Evan, your "I am actual dancer so I know what I'm talking about" comment totally invalidates any opinion or semblance of fact that surrounds that comment. That's just dumb - and I'm smart, so I know what I'm talking about.

99% of the people that watch and enjoy dance are NOT dancers - but they can still tell which people dance/perform better than others. That's why the winner is "America's FAVORITE dancer", and not "America's Greatest/Best dancer"....otherwise, you would have to throw every opinion that isn't a judge's out the window.

oh, and Evan CAN dance, and he's skilled at what he does...just not as skilled as the other 3.

Evan has not done any style of dance well this season, even his own. He can do his own little thing in his solos, but he can't perform another choreographers work. He does not have a personality during routines; it's always the same dull face.

I can appreciate that he brought something different to the competition when he was admitted to the top 20, but he's the same dancer now as he was then. He hasn't grown, he hasn't excelled, and better dancers have gone home before home. How has he become a favorite?

Oh, and the choreographers shouldn't have to change their material to fit the dancers; the dancers should be versatile enough to adapt to the style they've been given.

Ridiculous statement. He's been choreographed by Tyce, Mia, and Pasha/Anya - all of which are Emmy-nominated or Emmy winners. Add to that Louie von Amstel (twice?) and Sonya, and you pretty much have half the routines choreographed by the arguably best choreographers on the show.

He danced in his style (Broadway) twice. He did jazz twice as well (not including last night, where he also did a jazz and a pop jazz routine, I believe).

With the "kisses of death), he did Quickstep twice (including last night, and was STILL doing the same things wrong) and the Viennese once.

He only did Hip-hop and Contemporary once, and Latin twice (Samba & Rumba). And the Jive once as well.

Hardly any different than anyone else, and definitely NOT worse off than others (Bollywood?, Disco?, Russian Folk, anyone?)....

Stop making excuses for Evan, it's annoying. I respect the opinions that people have, and I don't mind him at all, but overall, he's out of his league - and has been since probably the Top 8. Congrats to him for getting this far.

My question is how does Evan's making it to the Top 4 affect his brother's chances in Season 6???? I actually liked him better than Evan...

I'm going to disagree with many of the posters - through most of the season, Evan received praise disproportionate to his ability; as if the judges were promoting him ftw. White guy 'cuteness' can only carry him so far.

Brandon's props have been well deserved - he's a pleasure to watch in most everything he's done. Likewise Kayla. I suppose she's attractive, but my eyes are always drawn away to...

Ah, Jeanine. Her personality flows out of every gesture, every move and every turn. Her dancing is beautiful, and she deserved each and every one of my votes. It'll be a pleasure to see someone who isn't a matchstick win!

I thought either Brandon or Jeanine would win because they have the personality & dance ability to go with it. Kayla's dancing is great, but she doesn't have the real personable personality. Evan has the personality & unless it is Broadway style, his dance ability is lacking. Anyway, Brandon is the winner. Check out:
