Dance your cares away, the Fraggle Rock movie's closer every day

Fraggle RockI didn't have cable growing up, so I was only able to catch Fraggle Rock when I was catting around town at all the cool kids' houses. As a long time lover of anything Muppet, I was fascinated by these Fraggles and Doozers and Gorgs, and it all looked just so wonderful. My earliest memory is Junior, a giant Gorg, holding up one of the Fraggles and saying "I caught a Fwaggle!" I thought he was wanting to eat it the way Gargamel tormented the Smurfs.

Way back in 2006, we told you a Fraggle Rock film was in the works. Now, Brian Henson tells MTV that a Fraggle Rock movie is inching closer. He also indicated that they're expanding the film "to be more accessible to a wider audience." I recently had the opportunity to watch Fraggle Rock, and while it did touch my nostalgia button, I can see where Henson's coming from here.

It may not be as "hand-holding" as Sesame Street, but Fraggle Rock definitely plays to a much younger crowd than Henson's more sophisticated properties like The Muppet Show, The Dark Crystal and Farscape. I wouldn't mind seeing more layers in Fraggle affairs. The beauty of The Muppet Show was that it could be appreciated on multiple levels. Hell, early Sesame Street had much of the same properties.

I'm not saying I'm ready for Gobo to cuss out Mokey for being too spacey, nor am I sure I want them coming fully out into our world, the way our earlier report indicated they were considering. If the Fraggles come to our world and interact in it the way the Muppets did in their classic movies, what does that mean for the Doozers and Gorgs? Or the Trash Heap? Though I guess they'd learn to appreciate the life they did have in the end.

Henson wouldn't spill any more details on what the film might be about, but indicated there's a finished script and it's ready for pre-production. Accountants are crunching numbers and it's a done enough deal that we can start counting the days until its premiere. Just don't ask how many days that is.
