So You Think You Can Dance: America's Favorite Dancer (season finale)

(S05E23) I think Cat Deeley looked fabulous tonight. The panel was chock-full of choreographers: Lil' C, Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe. They brought them all up on the dais so they could each choose their favorite dances from throughout the season. That means encore performances of the best of Season 5. That's not a bad way to fill two hours.
In the end, though, it comes down to Kayla, Brandon, Jeanine and Evan. Who did America love the most last night and throughout the summer? The recap actually gave me tingles. Despite a distinct lack of personalities, there were some stunning moments of dance. And I'm ever so thrilled that the new season is less than a month away. It's a long show, so hang in there.
GROUP NUMBER
Top 20 - "Brand New Day," The Wiz
(Broadway, Tyce Diorio) I liked this better the second time around; it seemed more grandiose.
Top 16 - "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)," Pitbull
(Hip-Hop/Latin ballroom, Dmitry Chaplin, Napoleon & Tabitha D'umo) One of the more innovative numbers we've seen. It was hot, diverse and sexy.
Top 8 - "One," A Chorus Line
(Contemporary, Mia Michaels) The final piece of the night, it became a fun tribute to the judges, who joined in for the final moments.
SPECIAL GUESTS
Talia Fowler - "Shot You Down," Audio Bullys
(Sonya Tayeh) Maybe for the finale, they should consider choreographing the solos. Fowler did a wonderful job of owning the stage by herself. By the end of the competition, we've seen the contestant's solos plenty of times, so why not mix it up and show us how a choreographer interprets a solo on this show.
The Rage Boyz Crew - "Feel It," Colby O'Donis & Mauli-B
(Hip-Hop, Tiffany Burton) People only loved them because they were kids. Yes, it's cute. But it's not amazing dance. A few solid performers surrounded by adequate doesn't make great. Sorry.
JUDGE'S PICKS / ENCORES
Jeanine & Phillip
"Mad," Ne-Yo (Hip-Hop, Tabitha & Napoleon D'umo)
(Adam Shankman's choice) That was so much better this time, and you can see how they've grown through the season.
Janette & Brandon
"Libertango," Forever Tango (Argentine Tango, Miriam Larici & Leonardo Barrionuevo)
(Nigel Lythgoe's choice) Janette, you're such a fiery little tamale. You forget how many lifts they had in that piece, and how flawlessly they breezed through them.
Asuka & Vitolio
"Dreams Are More Precious," Enya (Waltz, Louis van Amstel)
(Debbie Allen's choice) You forget just how beautifully some of these contestants danced as weeks go by without seeing them. I'm so glad they brought them back to remind us of the depth of this season's talent.
Jeanine & Jason
"If It Kills Me (The Casa Nova Sessions)," Jason Mraz (Contemporary, Travis Wall)
(Mary Murphy's choice) Oh my god, I loved this piece the first time around. Travis Wall is a choreographer powerhouse for sure.
Kayla & Max
"Jum Buh Day," House of Gypsies (Samba, Louis van Amstel)
(Mia Michaels' choice) I'm not sure if I agree that this was one of the strongest numbers of the season, nor was it particularly exciting tonight. Needed to get Max in the finale?
Caitlin & Jason
"Jai Ho," Slumdog Millionaire (Bollywood, Nakul Dev Mahajan)
(Lil' C's choice) The energy level couldn't match the music or the first time we saw it. I am still glad to see diverse styles, so long as it's not Russian Folk.
Randi & Evan
"Koop Island Blues," Koop f. Ane Brun (Contemporary, Mia Michaels)
(Adam Shankman's choice) Another dance that seemed to lose a little of its luster on the second go 'round, though I'm not sure why. Randi still has a fine bottom and it was still fun, but it seemed somehow as if it was taken more seriously this time around.
Jeanine & Brandon
"Tetsujin," The Matrix Revolutions (Paso Doble, Louis van Amstel)
(Mary Murphy's choice) While it's weird that this dance was first performed all of last night, I can't fault it's addition as it was incredibly well danced.
Kayla & Kupono
"Gravity," Sarah Bareilles (Contemporary, Mia Michaels)
(Nigel Lythgoe's choice) It is pieces like this that transcend the medium of dance and become art. Kupono's brutality and Kayla's vulnerability shone through and made this one of the moments of the season.
Janette & Brandon
"Loving Is Really My Game," Brainstorm (Disco, Doriana Sanchez)
(Tyce Diorio's choice) Again, not one of my top performances of the season. Kayla & Brandon's disco from a couple of weeks ago was more dynamic and exciting.
Melissa & Ade
"This Woman's Work," Maxwell (Contemporary, Tyce Diorio)
(Mia Michael's choice) Everything about this dance was sheer perfection. It was one of the top dances in five seasons of So You Think You Can Dance. Absolutely breathtaking, and even more poignant that breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate was in the audience; and of course they cut right to her.
AMERICA'S FAVORITE DANCER
The first one dropped was Kayla, and suddenly I wasn't sure which way it might go. Evan went third, and I'm okay with that, as well. Great in what he does, it would be hard to argue that he outdanced Jeanine and Brandon throughout this competition. And for the win, I was going to be content with whoever won. Brandon is and has always been the best dancer in the competition.
But it was time for a woman to take the crown again, and if it's about growth throughout the competition, Jeanine Mason became something truly special throughout the season. I'm sure a lot of people will cry foul, but she really did peak at the right time. She was stellar last night. Brandon may have been too consistently great throughout to win hearts.
