Shark Week + tree bark = ... hilarity?

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 11th 2009 7:00PM
Usually I post videos that I think are funny, interesting, clever, or maybe important. This one I'm posting because it's unfunny, silly, and only important because it shows what the Tonight Show is like now (unfortunately).

Last week Discovery had Shark Week. Last night, Conan showed up a preview of Bark Week. Yeah, a week dedicated to tree bark. This is one of the reasons I can't get into the Tonight Show. It seems like they're throwing every lame idea for a video into the show. Conan and Andy are funny guys, but there's so much on this show that just kills it (and I still hate Conan's mugging after every video and joke, and his painful introductions to bits).

Conan is totally ruining the Tonight Show for me. I can't even watch it any more. If I want to see something this campy and predictable I would rent Ernest Goes To Jail. No actually I would prefer Ernest over Conan. At least Ernest tries to really sell it. Conan just rides along as if he is the king of funny not realizing that his funny is invisible to us.

Looks to me like he's trying to step into Johnny's shoes. Mr Carson was known for his great comedy sketches and neither of his predecessors have managed to come up with material as effortlessly funny as what Johnny and Ed managed to produce in their day.
(recently "reels" channel did a whole marathon of Carson sketches which were hilarious and a great watch despite the dated material. Can't wait for the next one.)

I'm a huge Conan fan but he's trying too hard right now.

Reminds me of Artie Lange on MADTV. He said that at a pitch meeting they asked for ideas to spoof "Dead Man Walking" and he said "Ed McMahon Walking" as a joke.

Later that week he found himself in Ed McMahon make-up filming the sketch.
