Are you watching Millionaire?

Regis on MillionaireI have to admit, I'm a lover of game shows but even I'm not watching the 10th anniversary edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire on ABC. I keep forgetting it's even on, but if I remembered at 8PM I'd still skip it. Maybe it's the daytime version or the fact that it's on GSN several times a day.

The ratings haven't been too great in general (though they could be worse). Are you watching it?

Yes I'm watching it, but I wish they would have gone back to the original rules.

I thought that the new Millionnaire shows with Regis Philbin were quite good. It flows better and I like that they're getting through the questions in rapid time. The long gaps of contestants taking a long time to give the final answer were long gone. Back then, the interest was huge when there wasn't a very new primetime game show in a while. But it has changed since 1999, with the competition of dramas and reality shows on cable networks. I believe that this same competition took a chunk of its audience on Sunday night. The graphics are better this time. The other time it ran on ABC, it looked like a typical '90s game show, but the current technologies of today update the show a lot more.

When I heard about the 10th anniversary series, I was excited. Then I heard there would be celebrities and gimmicks and such.

Also, ABC hasn't promoted it much. I see billboards for Flash Forward, but nothing about the 10th anniversary of Millionaire. It's like someone at ABC feared it would be a hit again and wanted it to fail...

I'm not watching it for two reasons;

A - If it's the 10th anniversary version, it better feel like the old-school game. Adding the gimmicks like the timer and the inexplicable celebrities, and changing around the lifelines feels downright silly and makes it feel as if was the sydicated episodes thrown in primetime with Reege hosting instead.

B - It's not in HD. I have built an inherit bias against programs on network TV that don't make the investment in utilizing the 16:9 screen (ahem, most reality shows on ABC and NBC). If you don't care about how you present your show in general and just do it the usual way it's been done for years, why should I care when you're happy producing the show the usual way? If it's the 10th anniversary version, it better be the best celebration possible, thus it needed to be in HD.
