What You Missed Last Night: Jon Stewart on Miss Crankypants Suit

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 12th 2009 12:36PM
You've probably seen video of Hillary Clinton's response to a question at a press conference in the Congo. Someone asked her what President Clinton thought about something. She, well, didn't like that question at all.

I don't quite understand the end though, when the audience "oooos" about the CNN anchors saying the person who asked the question might have been talking about President Obama and made a mistake.

Ease up on your throttle there, John. No one blamed Clinton. Mistakes happen, and the media getting its collective dander up about this is nothing new. But hopefully Clinton went and apologized to the person she snapped at, if it was a mistranslatioin.

And yes, Hilary did have a personal talk with the person in question.

Plain and simple, Mrs. Clinton was asked an insulting question. Your telling me in this day and age the Congo can't find an interpreter who understands english? Bull! Stop blaming Mrs. Clinton, you can see her looking around as if to say, did i just hear what i heard? And nobody corrected the question. Cheers to Mrs. Clinton.

She wasn't asked an insulting question. She was asked a mistranslated question.

I think what the audience is reacting to is the possibility that Hillary was reacting to a question that had been interpreted incorrectly.

The questioner likely may have been asking "What does the President (Obama not Clinton) think, through the mouth of Mrs. Clinton, and what does Mr. Mutombo think of this situation?"

And either the questioner or the interpreter said "Clinton" when they meant "Obama." And Hillary, perhaps having some sensitivity regarding Bill's diplomatic role, didn't pick up on the likely error in interpretation and therefore responded in the prickly manner she did.

Pretty sure he mean that the *translator* got it wrong, and the asker said Obama but it was translated as Clinton. So the entire story is because of a mistranslation.
