Armando Iannucci talks up new season of BBC's The Thick of It

Malcolm Tucker removes another man's dignity on The Think of It.The Thick of It is not only one of the funniest shows in the history of British TV, it's the smartest most insightful political comedy in the history of the medium anywhere on the planet.

The news earlier this year that it's coming back for a second season on BBC2 after its original six episode run (and a Christmas special) trumps any announcement American TV comedies can muster.

In this new video -- shot while promoting In the Loop (a movie based on The Thick of It) -- series creator Armando Iannucci discussed the series' return to production.

Produced and written by Iannucci, The Thick of It examines the filthy inner workings of the British government -- revealing the petty squabbles, dereliction of duty and complete disdain for average citizens that I imagine runs through every country's leadership. Yes -- even amidst the ethereal glow of President Obama's White House.

The Thick of It -- an equal opportunity offender -- appeals to anyone with a healthy disdain for politics. Iannucci never examines the leanings of its fictional Prime Minister. Liberal and conservative policies are held in equal contempt, and it's made clear that bureaucrats and spin masters run the entire show.

And, Iannucci should be forever lauded for bringing us Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi) -- the most wonderfully unrestrained, foul-mouthed speaker of truth television will ever see.
