Rescue Me: Zippo

(S05E20) "Call Turks and Caicos - tell people to start stabbing their eyes out." - Needles
This whole season of Rescue Me has been sort of a question mark for me. That's no secret - it's been excellent, but trying to determine what direction it's headed in has been a little tough. Obviously, the past four or five eps have really focused on Tommy's Sheila vs. Janet dilemma and I'm pretty sure it's safe to assume that the final two episodes are gonna stick with that trend. How do I know? Well... I don't. Last night's episode was the last one FX sent out for early preview, so I'm basing what's after the jump on my own speculation and one potential HUGE spoiler. So there. You've been warned.
We'll come back to that. Let's discuss a few other quick hits first:
- Anyone have any idea why Carla is calling Franco? It was a quick scene and there was no real context. Maybe she wants him back?
- Lou and Candy's one quick scene was pretty ambiguous too. I still have no idea if she's playing him or not. My only speculation right now is that she's pressing for the island honeymoon so bad because she's done something horrible, is on the run from the cops, and the marriage/name change makes it easier to leave the continental 48?
- Speaking of quick scenes, those were about the only two. Essentially this ep was split into four ten minute chunks - the supermarket, Sheila, Janet, and Kelly. Seems like this 22 episode thing is really giving Leary, Tolan, and Reilly some liberty to stretch some things out a bit...
- Maggie's arrival at the bar seemed to be a little bit of foreshadowing I thought. Something bad has to happen to either Mick, Teddy, or Ellie right? This bender the 3 of them are on has to go somewhere.
OK, moving on to what may potentially be a spoiler, so again - you've been warned.
Here we go. First let me say this - I do think Janet is who Jimmy had the affair with. Yes, Jimmy told Tommy that it wasn't Janet, but let's not forget that's only Tommy telling himself that. It's what he wants and hopes to be the truth. Janet telling Tommy that she slept with Jimmy only once before they all got married was true (I think we knew that?), but it was also just to pacify Tommy. The key line was Janet asking why it mattered whether she slept with him then or a few weeks before he died. It certainly explains why Sheila has always, right from season one, had so much dislike for Janet. Especially since she claims to know who the other woman was.
Sheila on the other hand has become increasingly erratic. We know she goes on and off her meds, and she's become borderline obsessive with trying to convince Tommy to pick her. She even went as far as threatening injury in this ep by waving that zippo around. Wouldn't be the first time Sheila lit a room on fire with Tommy in it.
Before I get to my point, I don't think Kelly factors into this at all. She's just a fun distraction and after last night's stellar scene with Leary, I've pulled a complete 180° on Tierney. She's got me hooked on Kelly and I can't wait to find out what else is in that damn box besides a bong and some weed.
So what's my prediction? Well, you may have seen the blind item that Ausiello posted about a month ago. I won't describe it here, but I will say that it applies perfectly to Rescue Me - especially considering everything I just outlined and assuming Tommy ultimately picks Janet and not Sheila. Read it if you like and speculate with me, but if you choose to comment, please make it clear that you're about to discuss a possible spoiler so others are aware. Could make for a helluva finale.
