Daniel Wright getting a second chance on The Biggest Loser

Daniel Wright, 312 lbs.Yesterday, NBC revealed the cast for the new season of The Biggest Loser, and I was thrilled to see that last season's heaviest contestant Daniel Wright was among the new losers. Daniel was heavily crippled in his weight loss goals by the "Couples" format in place last season.

Dan had a great attitude and really wanted to make things work, but his partner David didn't have the drive to change, which ultimately cost them both the chance to continue beyond the fourth week. Daniel, who started at 454 pounds (the heaviest contestant ever until this season), still managed to drop to 312 pounds by the finale.

I can't help but suspect that the producers of the show felt badly for Daniel. Here was this kid who was so young and so heavy and wanted to change but just didn't have any support from his partner. On the other end of the spectrum, you had young Mike there with his dad, and by fighting together they made it to the finale. Daniel never got that opportunity.

When I was watching the show last year, I felt that Dan and Carla got screwed by having terrible partners who lacked true motivation. It's a major drawback to the couples format, but it does set up some great drama. Maybe good for television, but not so much for these contestants.

But now, starting at 312 pounds, Daniel has a chance to really make for himself the kind of body and future he really seems to want. Oddly enough, he's going from being the heaviest contestant in the history of the show last season to having half of this season's contestants weigh more than him as their journey begins.
