Staples' "Most wonderful time of the year" ad is back

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 7th 2009 5:01PM
This is the time of year when kids go back to school (maybe it happened a couple of weeks ago where you live or this week in other parts of the country), and Staples has pulled their classic "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" ad out of storage. This is one of my favorite commercials.

By the way, this was first run in 1994. Which means that the kids in the ad are probably out of college by now. You are old.

They've also done a remake, which is horrible... its weird that they've got both in rotation... the new one is too much with the kids being dragged around on a sofa while the daughter snaps her bubble gum... I love the classic one... kids looking sad is all you need!

Great ad .... this seems to be a trend lately. My husband and I have been able to spot a lot of commercials lately that are from quite a while back - a Folgers commercial and a Pizza Hut commercial come to mind. People always say they hate commercials, but the good ones are always worth remembering or watching again.

I freaking LOVE this commercial. The only one that comes close to it is the Staples back to school commercial featuring Alice Cooper where he corrects the kids when they misquote the lyrics for "School's Out".

Freaking awesome...

Classic! I don't remember this from 1994, but I'm glad Staples brought it back. It's timeless.

..."at guaranteed low prices."

What the hell does that even mean? Not guaranteed lowest prices. Guaranteed only "low"? What's a "low" price? If it's higher than someone else's price, how can it be low? Or do they mean the price of a Sharpee pen at Staples is "guaranteed low" as compared to the price of a 52' yacht (which is not sold at Staples)?

I hate weasel marketing talk like that. Bugs me almost as much as calling everything a "solution" ... which implies you have a problem. I've give you a tooth whitening solution right out of my ass.

It's one of my favorite commercials, ever. Thanks very much for writing about it, Bob! And letting me see it again.

I like how my Staples doesn't even look like that anymore.

I don't remember this commercial in 1994, I was still in High School then I'd remember that! But I do love it still every time I see it, all because I am reminded I DON'T HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL ! I'd much rather get paid for losing 8 hours of my life 5 days a week.

This is one of my favorite commercials of all time. I liked it even back in '94 when I was in elementary school. I love that they use it almost every year. Those kids faces are priceless.
