Ro-kay, rets Scooby-Doo ourselves!

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 10th 2009 11:26AM
Scooby-Doo: The Mystery BeginsFirst we had Mad Men Yourself, where you can make 1960s-ish, retro-looking avatars for yourself, and now comes Scooby-Doo Yourself. It's a promotion for the new prequel movie Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins, which premieres this Sunday on Cartoon Network.

Unlike the Mad Men version, where you could just create your own from a series of options on the screen, you have to upload a good picture of yourself and it will make you into a Scooby-Doo character.

On a side note, is that supposed to be Fred in the pic??

We know she isn't Asian because she was drawn as a white girl. Some episodes show distinctly round eyes. She also has white parents. Also Dinkley doesn't sound like a Japanese name.

There has also been several episodes with Asians. Drawn somewhat realistically, not as stereotypes (in older cartoons maybe, not the newer ones). But they are always obviously Asians. She isn't drawn this way, so she isn't intended to be Asian.

The article made note of Freddie's hair, I thought I'd point out the changes done to the Velma character. They are both inconsistent with the cartoon and the 2 movies.

It doesn't really matter, it's cheap movie based on a cartoon that's used the same plot for about 40 years. And I've spent too much time talking about it. Time to get back to work.

You weren't the only one who noticed. Even as a fan of both Velma and Japanese culture, I still went "what the...?" when I saw the commercials. As a matter of fact, so much so that I didn't even notice Fred wasn't blonde.

Do we know Velma isn't Asian? Just because she wasn't drawn with buck teeth and slanty eyes? She did have short, straight dark hair and the 'diligent Oriental' intelligentsia persona.

Yes that's Fred with dark hair. Also Velma is now Japanese.

I don't expect continuity, but Fred is blond and Velma isn't Asian. It reeks of political correctness. "Lets add an minority! That will fix it."

It's a cheap, filmed in Canada, movie for the Cartoon Network. So don't expect it to be very good.

That being said may kids are looking forward to it and will probably like it.
