Project Runway: What a Girl Wants

by Michael Pascua, posted Sep 11th 2009 1:06AM
The models of Project Runway
(S06E04) Project Runway loves messing with their designers. This week's challenge was that the models were their clients. It's not groundbreaking (season one's Wedding Dress Challenge comes to mind), but the real challenge is trying to tell these girls that they're delusional and not designers. Epperson's model Matar wanted an orange, punk, flowing, tiger dress. Thankfully, he took pieces and translated it correctly.

Tim announces that this is the first one-day challenge. This group has it easy; season five's first four challenges were all one-day. They probably wanted to make sure Johnny didn't have another mental breakdown and quit.

After consulting with the models, the designers were given 30 minutes at Mood. I really wish that the contestants were given longer time at Mood, because they would have better time to make decisions. Season one proved that time at Mood didn't necessarily mean the contestants had taste. The designers came back quiet, quickly formulating their dresses, sewing things together and nervously taping on their forms.

Shirin's model apparently comes from the school of Santino Rice. Ebony wanted a jumpsuit in royal blue with gold trim. Apparently, the industry that Ebony wants to impress is factory workers. Shirin didn't listen to Ebony at all and made her a dress.

When Tim visits, he approves of Althea's three-piece outfit and Christopher's lettuce dress. He worries when Logan uses the word "smurf," Qrystal's brown and black dress was messy, and Carol Hannah's skewed old. Qrystal doubts herself too much and scraps the dress, similar to how she had to change her red carpet dress.

The day quickly passes, and the contestants only had two hours the next day to do final arrangements. Nicholas thinks Epperson and Johnny's outfits look bad, while Christopher thinks that Epperson might be misunderstood. The whole set of interviews in the segment seemed contrived.

At judging, to join my lament of "Where is Michael Kors?" I can now add: "Where is Nina Garcia?" We get Marc Bouwer and Marie Claire's Zoe Glassner as their replacements (the preview for next week guarantees the return of Zoe). At least we'll never see Anne Slowey attempt to judge again.

Our top three were Epperson (Marc Bouwer approved), Carol Hannah (a good mix of soft and hard), and Althea (the judges loved the dress and Tanisha's walk). Although I agree with Althea winning, I'm disturbed by the fact that Tanisha didn't have a bra on and her headlights were on high beam.

The bottom three was Logan (prom dress), Johnny (bridesmaid), and Qrystal (old looking). After the judges deliberation, Logan and Qrystal were the bottom two and Qrystal was sent packing.

Even if the original dress was bad, I think that Qrystal could have stood a better chance with the rolled out of bed black/brown dress. To make it worse, the way that Valerie's hair was styled, all she needed was the silver suitcase and she was a Deal or No Deal model. Did she deserve to go home? Leave comments below.

Guest judge - Wow! Her comments were not helpful at all. The comments were totally insulting to the designer and the model. We have seen Michaels Kors and Nina Garcia absolutely hate a designers work, but they put a nice spin in the critique and are never disrespectful.

Agreed, she was not good. How does it help to "thank god" that Valerie is not a fashion designer?

I agree. Q's first piece would've been better if she added a bit of structure. I think it's sad that those in the bottom 3 were the ones who listened the most to their models. I also think it's funny that after the models described how much they enjoyed their dresses, the judges immediately described how much they hated the dress' fashion aesthetic.

i think Althea's outfit would not have worked with a bra, although some petals would have been nice... i was sorry to see Qrystal go. i do agree with you; she would have faired better with the brown/black piece. even if it did look like rumpled bedsheets, it would have been more interesting than that "i give up" LBD.

I am not feeling this season. Michael Kors is sorely missed in these judging sessions. And I'm not getting the winning outfits. I like Ra'mon but last week was not his best work. And this week, I thought Althea's outfit was a hot, crunchy mess. And for all of Heidi's obsession with breasts, how did she fail to notice that Tanisha's breasts did a separate strut down the runway?
