The Vampire Diaries sets ratings record

by Brad Trechak, posted Sep 12th 2009 12:02PM
The Vampire DiariesIt has vampires at a time when vampires are cool. It has teen angst. It's on the network that has low ratings to begin with (although they did beat ABC and Fox for that night, but they had repeats). It should come as no surprise that The Vampire Diaries has set a ratings record for its premiere on The CW.

I didn't watch the premiere (our review of it is here). I'm at the age where I find the CW "teen angst" formula a bit painful to watch. For all that, the network can comfort itself with that fact that I am not the target market.

That formula is what made Smallville not live up to its potential (and makes that show even less likely to continue after this season. They're not teenagers anymore). It is interesting how The Vampire Diaries cast their leads from right out of Smallville.

From what I've read, advance reviews have been poor for the show. What do you think? Does The Vampire Diaries have some potential?

No I will not last. I'll give this show 6 episodes. Bad acting and borrring. Nothing original about the story. If ur a supernatural fans don't watch vampire diaries. If ur a smallville fan don't watch VD. If your melrose place or 90210 fan don't watch VD. Let's show CW or Loyalty to our favorite shows to keep them coming back to the next season.

I cannot believe that this got record ratings and supernatural dropped.

I love vampire stuff, I can even tolerate Twilight but this was utter tripe. I couldn't make it through the whole episode, I will give it a full chance at some point but it's definitely not quality TV.

Supernatural on the other hand is becoming one of my favourite shows on TV, i've not seen a show feel as fresh in its 5th season since Angel and I don't recall any show ever having a better soundtrack; it's the only show where I actually enjoy the recaps.

A Supernatural-esque show with Vampires would be awesome. Yet they decided to make it like their 10 other shows that nobody except pre-pubescent girls watch. Get ready for the ratings to plummet next week.

It's better than I thought it would be. As CC stated, it's essentially Twilight (altho' Twilight probably found inspiration from VD's book form), with the lead actor doing a decent impression of David Boreanaz in S1 of Buffy. The opening horror bit reminded me of Scream (although Scream 1 lacked the predictable death scenes).

The lead actress does a decent job, but right now she's the 'pretty,' responsible one and I'd like to see more heft from the actress to show a centuries-old vampire desires her for more than her similarity to his past love.
And, my main wish is that the show had a bit more humour or ironic self-awareness, which I feel the CW's new shows tend to lack.

Ugg, It really was a little formulaic, but I'm hoping it'll get a bit less angsty and goes the route of Supernatural... at the very least Roswell.

I actually watched the second half of the premiere. After 10 minutes I turned to my roommate and said "So, its just 90210 with vampires. And less interesting."

I won't pick this one up.

No, it blows (because I refuse to use the "it sucked joke" with something this bad)
