Project Runway: Fashion Headliners

by Michael Pascua, posted Sep 18th 2009 2:20AM
Althea Harper makes touch-ups on her paper dress.(S06E05) I have a problem with this season of Project Runway. The contestants seem to focus on how much they hate other designs instead of being friendly and helping or saying that the outfit looks like a hot mess to their face. They hope that the clothes will sink the competitors, so they stay silent.

The drama continued this week when Tim Gunn revealed that the challenge was using newspaper as fabric. The unconventional material challenges lead to a lot of failures (fat paper Minnie Mouse from Season Three's Garbage challenge comes to mind), but overall, the contestants stepped up their game.

The contestants had only a few seconds to grab tons of paper. Afterward, Tim Gunn gives us a Wikipedia history of paper as clothing and lets the designers loose. The designers struggle with the idea of paper in the beginning. Carol Hannah holds up a piece of paper and it looks like a bloody maxi-pad. Several designers use the word "origami" to describe their dresses. Shirin makes a dress that looks like it would fit in Leanne's final collection last season.

Johnny attempts to make origami cranes that would become the strap of a blood red dress. Tim bashes it using the words "kindergarten" and "craft project." Johnny pulls a Qrystal and ditches his dress in lieu of something thrown together. When his model shows up, he creates a sob story about how a non-existent steamer destroyed his old dress. According to Models of the Runway, Emarie believed him. Why couldn't he just have the balls to say, "My first dress was crap" to Emarie?

When the contestants get back the next day, a whole ton of contestants get lost in the blur. Epperson, who was prominent last week, disappeared completely; his design was above average. R'amon makes another dress that fits his aesthetic. Logan uses a color similar to last week's smurf, but in smaller doses.

The contestants arrive to judging without Michael Kors or Nina Garcia. Zoe Glassner is back from last week, and I've grown to appreciate her. Filling in Michael's seat is Tommy Hilfiger, who is there because of his Macy's connections. Our actual "guest judge" is Desperate Housewife, Eva Longoria Parker.

After the paper dresses paraded down the runway we got our top three: Althea (body conscious, pretty pattern), Christopher (great use of soft and hard), and Irina (Loved by the girls, Tommy didn't like the scotch tape). The bottom three were Gordana (pedestrian), Johnny (hooker), and Nicholas (insect). Johnny then proceeds to spew his steamer story to the judges. Tommy Hilfiger didn't believe it at all. Irina won the challenge, and Johnny got sent home. In the back, Tim was shocked and appalled that Johnny lied.

Johnny should have been sent home for sitting around and doing crossword puzzles. I disagree with Irina winning and thought Christopher's was better overall. Do you think the judges made the right decision? Leave comments below.

I thought Althea's design should have won. It had beautiful, body conscious construction and the amazingly precise geometric pattern she constructed from the newspapers was amazing. I almost felt that they didn't choose her for the win simply because they had chosen her the week before -- and I'm not saying this from a biased position because she is not my favorite designer this season. So far I'm leaning towards Carol Hannah as my favorite with Gordana (who they were unreasonably harsh to this week), or possibly Ra'mon, as my second favorite. I'm looking forward to what all of the designers have to present going forward. Most of the weakest links have been rightly ousted thus far.

I agree with all of you: Chris' dress was stunning and should have won.

To me it didn't really matter if Chris or Irina won, because I doubt both would be sent home next week so moot point. But if it was me, Chris would've won.

And Jordana in the bottom three... for being safe? First of all, was it really safe? From the looks of it, she seemed to have done a lot. And the fact that it looks like a normal dress (and not some paper mache project or some origami explosion) was actually seen as a BAD thing by the judges. Extra lame.

Still I agreed on the bottom two. I also felt that if Johnny owned up to his crappy first dress without that fictional backstory, he probably could've outlasted Nicholas.

Favorite dress that wasn't in the top/bottom: Logan's.

Chris was robbed! I loved his design; especially the hard shell contrasting the soft feathered bottom. Irina's looked a little dated to me and Johnny definitely deserved to go home. Insecure, whiny and a coward... He just wasn't ready for a competitive show... and I suspect the red dress was better than what he ultimately showed on the runway. He should've trusted his instincts.

I've never heard Tim be so abrupt with an evictee, he usually says 'we'll miss you... go clean your space", his words to Johnny "go clean your space", wow he was pissed.

Not sure of Irina's and Christopher's whose design should have won, I thought they both did well. I didn't think Gordana's was bottom fodder, though, I thought it was lovely.
