House bombshell: Jennifer Morrison is out

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Sep 24th 2009 4:10PM

Jennifer Morrison in a scene from the fifth season finale of House.
Just when we started to think that things might be getting back to normal on House...

EW's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Jennifer Morrison is being written out of House and that her last episode will air in November. I don't want to say much more than that - details after the jump.

According to Ausiello, Morrison finished taping her last scene this week and he made it clear that she did not quit. This was a creative decision handed down by David Shore and his producing team. While she could potentially be back later in the season for a guest appearance, nothing has been finalized in that department.

So what do we know? Two big things actually - she isn't being killed off and Jesse Spencer, who plays Chase, is sticking around.

After last season barely featured any scenes with Cameron or Chase, there was some hope that their screen time would increase this season - especially since they finally tied the knot in last season's finale.

Safe assumption? The marriage starts off rocky and I'm guessing that House's return as a new man from Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital doesn't help matters either. It's feasible that the odd sexual tension that always existed between House and Cameron might play a role in her departure from Princeton-Plainsboro.

While I have nothing to back this up, I'm guessing this has been in the works for a while and no one - not even Morrison - knew it was coming. A November exit would probably be about maybe, what? The seventh or eighth episode of the season? That likely means this plot was hatched by the writers before the season started shooting, and seeing as how Morrison was part of all the promotional effort for the season, she probably had no reason to suspect that her time was up. Based on this interview with Ausiello from last month, she sure talked like she was sticking around.

It's too bad. I was really looking forward to seeing House and the whole team back together again.

Oh, good grief! I just love it when someone hijacks a thread! -- Especially when it's the one article I'm really interested in and want to know what people think about Jen leaving. I feel like I'm back on the Fox Boards. Ick.

Jonathan, I thank you for doing the article the way you did because so many fans have been waiting and desperately hoping for so long that Cameron would get back in the story and maybe actually interact with House. Or maybe, gasp!, even get to flirt with him a little -- which TPTB so "thoughtfully" cut off abruptly after they got so many fans invested in their relationship. So if you hadn't mentioned Jen up top, I probably wouldn't have read it because (a) we'd have already heard if it was Hugh; (b) Robert Sean Leonard has no desire to leave and they sure as heck aren't writing HIM out; and (c) I don't give a flying fig about the rest of the cast. In fact, thanks to TPTB I pretty much hate them all.

Someone mentioned Jen & Jesse's real-life engagement changing the course of the show, I agree things could have been very different. I had hoped that when they broke up in real life, that would put the show back on a better course. But no, they put the two CLOSER together. I found it unpleasant and sad to see them acting all lovey-dovey with each other when we all knew they had broken up.

To echo another commenter, we haven't seen her much in the last season. While it never seemed to get much discussion, I think it is a safe bet that when the real-life engagement was put on hold and then broken up, the writers were forced to write the characters apart from each other.

I'm not too surprised that based on this occurring so long ago, that this hadn't happened sooner. With the new team of replacements, I honestly only continued to watch to see how they would bring the team back together. It was to the point middle of last year that the show left the "must watch" into "when I get around to it on the TIVO" much in part due to the cast.

Chase and Cameron got paid to do nothing the last few seasons but still got to stay in the main credits. They seemed like afterthoughts and all I could think of was "what if" they had never gotten engaged in real life? I'm sure we'd be looking at a much different show at this point.

"Joel Keller said...

Here's Ausiello's headline:

Exclusive: Jennifer Morrison leaving 'House'

Please ask him to apologize, too, because he's the source. As soon as he apologizes, we'll apologize."

I DID complain to Ausiello when I got the headline via Twitter . I was sad to see it repeated here. Since when does 'someone else did it' make it okay? I removed Ausiello from my Twitter account for doing it, but I didn't expect I'd have to for TV Squad. I don't care what is reported, I care how headlines are used when it comes to spoilers and want to be able to rely on specific sources to be consistent in how information is disseminated.

I really don't like the idea. Jennifer deserve more space on the show...

Well, I read this somewhere else this A.M, so I guess it is true. This is the end of the series. She made that series fly as much as House did and it just wont work without her. After all the "head games" they put their fan thru in the last 3 seasons waiting for that mess to straighten out. Her getting married to the "bad guy" was the last straw. Now they are writing her out of the series so they can try to replace her with Cuddy. That can' work. I'm sure now the reason they did all of this is because they wanted her to play a co-star role and not pay her to do it. GOOD FOR HER! Laure makes 250.000 bucks an epesode. I wish J. Morrison good luck and I will never watch this FUD again. Good Bye DR. House.

Would have sworn she (and Chase) had been written out for at least 2 years now.

This on top of the lame "I want to get better" wrapped-with-a-bow ending of the premiere, and it's a shame to see what was a good show going downhill so quickly.

I'll probably still watch, but at this point it's just to watch Hugh Laurie's acting chops.

For the life of me i can't understand how can someone say "it's not a big deal" !, of course it is a big deal, i personally only visit tv squad and nothing else, sometimes i like to read a spoiler other times i don't, it depends on how much i am interested in the show, for them to do it like that in the headline is disrespectful and it makes it much worse that no one even wants to admit that it was a mistake, i am not a big house fan either but i was really pissed when i read the headline, had that been lost and i found a headline like " ben will be out " it would have been the last time i visit this site, what is so hard to understand here ? some people just don't like spoilers, they want to enjoy their favorite shows, they want to be surprised and in disbelief, and now some people have the nerve to ask them to stay away from the internet if they don't want to get spoiled ? this is not an overreaction, this is a matter of principle, i come here every single day, and this is disrespectful from tv squad, and they owe everyone here an apology and a promise that it won't happen again, it's really that simple.

You blew it badly. Not just the headline, you even include a picture of the character, just in case the actor's name doesn't click right away in the reader's mind.

All this 'It's "news", not a spoiler", 'The other guy did it first', 'Lots of other sites did it too' and all the rest of the finger pointing and prancing around just amount to childish ducking the blame.

A long established actor/character being "out" is a major spoiler. Your own headline out and out *labels* it a "bombshell". Trying to pretend otherwise only makes you look foolish or desperate.

Swallowing your pride and admitting a mistake would have been much more dignified, and honest, than running for cover.

As much as you might not call it a spoiler, TVSquad's weekly Spoiler's Anonymous includes Jennifer Morrison leaving House as the first bullet point. TvSquad can't call it a spoiler in one headline, and not in another.
