FlashForward: No More Good Days (series premiere)

(S01E01) Well, that was it. The most eagerly anticipated premiere of the season, if early buzz is any indicator. Is it the next Lost? Is it as good as everyone says it was? It can be. As much as I liked this pilot, though, I can't say that I know for sure how good the show is going to be based on it.

The opening sequence was every bit as epic and awe-inspiring as the opening moments of Lost. Whereas in Lost we had the aftermath of a cataclysmic plane crash on a deserted island, here we had the cataclysmic crash of ... everything! They dropped us right into the moments after the global blackout to immediately show us the impact it would have. It was like the opening of a big budget summer blockbuster.

Oh, but I wanted to see more scenes of the aftermath of this cataclysmic event. I think I could have watched that for almost this entire episode. The global fallout of this must be catastrophic, and while I know it would have been cost prohibitive to do it, damn, it would have been awe-inspiring to really show how epic this event was.

In that moment, I couldn't help but think of the majesty of the concept: that every person on the planet blacks out at the exact same time for two minutes, seventeen seconds and has a vision of their lives on April 29, 2010 at 10pm Pacific Time. That's seven billion visions, combining to paint a complete picture of that future moment. Can the mosaic of those prophecies be compiled in time?

In time for what? Well, so far we don't know, but as I was watching it, I kept thinking that someone had to have had a vision of something that was important. I think Mark's (Joseph Fiennes) vision is important, but more in helping him pull the pieces together. But there's a significance to that date, other than it being my brother's birthday.

The awkward positions that the visions are putting people in with their interactions with one another is fascinating to watch. Next week, Olivia is going to meet that boy's father and recognize him from her vision as the man who was not her husband that she had intimate feelings toward. That will dramatically impact their relationship. Especially because he had to have had the same vision.

Who were the people gunning for Mark in his vision? Dominic Monaghan's character has one now, per the preview sequences, so what does that mean about his character? There's some connection with Red Panda, which seems to be an omnipresent corporation. There was a bus billboard for the brand, and the logo was also on Mark's wall of clues. Oh, shout out for the nod to Oceanic Airways on the billboard in the distance there. A great nod to an obvious thematic inspiration in Lost.

The fact that I'm left wondering so many things proves that as the opening salvo of an epic drama, "No More Good Days" was a resounding success. I want to meet more characters, see more visions, watch Mark pull the pieces together, find out if Demetri (John Cho) seeing nothing can mean something other than his death. I want to know why Marks' daughter said that her vision/dream was that there were "no more good days." What does it mean? What path is humanity on now?

And that video from Detroit. The man who wasn't asleep. Oh that moment grabbed me and would not let go. It got me excited about this mystery in a way that even seven billion people passing out simultaneously couldn't. There's something to this and it's going to be fascinating. And if that guys turns out to be the kid's father, from Olivia's dream, then my wife will have been right and I'll have to start listening to her more.

I enjoyed the show but I just kept thinking what about the people in Australia etc, can you blackout whilst sleeping?

Cheers

My sons and I LOVED the premiere. It didn't seem overhyped to us because we rarely watch ABC except for Lost which, of course, isn't on right now. I used to watch more ABC, like Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, and Samantha Who, but since they were cancelled, I don't find any reason to watch ABC. I think it's funny that many people found Joseph Fiennes acting to be lacking and that he was trying too hard to be "Jack". Matthew Fox and his Jack character have always been my least favorite part of Lost, (except for Kate) and he's not exactly known for his stellar acting. Fiennes on the other hand has quite the impressive resume, education, and family background. I've always like him better than his brother Ralph, and I agree with whomever said they loved him in Enemy at the Gates with Jude Law. The one burning question my sons and I have after the premiere is: If Mark and Demetri were in the car together when the black-out happened, why wasn't Demetri in the car with Mark when they came to? Count us in as ones who don't believe Demetri is telling the truth about his vision of nothing.

I always watch the first episode of all new shows to give them a chance. I watch Lost and it confuses the hell out of me sometimes I haven't a clue what is happening but I am stuck with it now. This show I will pass I don't need another confusing show to follow LOL Mark's wall of clues which I guess he calls the mosaic looks like it is gonna be a bitch of confusion at least to me LOL so at this point I don't really care what caused or who was behind the 2min. 17sec. blackouts

Obviously they've never seen a Detriot Tigers game, the crowd is always asleep and that guy walking around, the beer vendor who lost his beer tray & was looking for it....

This is not based on the book in any way other than the title and the idea that the entire human race's consciousness jumps forward. I saw the book at Borders yesterday, and it says "Inspiration for the new ABC prime-time series!" Inspiration is right.

In the book, they're pretty sure why it happened, but not really interested in why. The book is more about the effects of knowing the future (and the book's flashforward is about 30 years, I think). That's not a spoiler, because most of the book happens after the flashforward.

So glad someone else mentioned the book! The show is MUCH more fast paced than the book with no clear indication (yet!) of the cause of the blackout. I think it's going to be interesting how (if) they reference the book. Other than Lloyd Simcoe who was in the book and not nearly as interesting. I'm really looking forward to this show!

This show looks so good! I have a few quick points,
1. Why was the female FBI agent getting a sonogram at 10pm? It looked to me like it was daylight; that would put her somewhere in Eastern Europeish (at the earliest).
2. A kangaroo in the city is just as weird as a polar bear in the jungle.
3. There seems to be an emphasis on numbers....hmm.....
4. The black FBI agent and British woman in London working on the RUTHERFORD case. (Shannon Rutherford from Lost)
5. Back to the kangaroo; kangaroos are indigenous to Australia AND it was in LA. Just like Oceanic Flight 815: from Sydney to LA.

Yeah, I'm definately on board with this show. Can't wait for next week!

I found many, many parallels with lost. The one that is missing is JJ Abrams. Are there any other creative team members from Lost associated with this show? This show is THICK with Lost allusions. How about the start of the whole show--the hero wakes up, on his back, to the aftermath of a horrible accident. I practically felt like I was seeing the crash of Oceanic Flight 815.

Wouldn't it be amazing if the events on the Island on Lost were the cause of the blackouts in Flash Forward? I don't know of any shows in the history of television that have intertwined their storytelling to such an extent, but it sure would be one hell of a gimmick.

I liked it a lot. I'm just hoping - praying almost - that I won't be disappointed somewhere down the line where it turns out they have no real plan for this thing and are just making it up as they go along, like certain other shows I won't mention. (And I don't know anything about the book so I don't know if the answers are in the book and already established).

I'm figuring with my bad luck with television shows, this one will get cancelled, simply because it's not about doctors, lawyers or a reality show about singing, dancing or surviving.

But, I don't care, I will watch it, because original TV like this deserves it. Great acting, original story, intriguing premise: it has everything in it that I go for.

As for how long this premise can last? Who cares? I will enjoy the (roller-coaster) ride for as long as it does, and enjoy every minute!

And, yes, I caught the Oceanic poster (details like that usually escape me) and giggled. Right on...! (They must know their target market and are gunning for us Lost fans...!)
