Friends feature film rumors begin again

by Allison Waldman, posted Sep 29th 2009 1:02PM
friends_NBCYou know, ever since Friends went off the air, rumors have cropped up again and again that there would be a big screen version of the show, presumably picking up the storylines from the grand finale. Of course, if you remember the great stories on Joey, maybe post-Friends storytelling isn't such a grand idea after all.

However, at least one person is sure that a feature film is coming. James Michael Tyler, who poured the coffee at Central Perk as Gunther (he also ogled Rachel), was asked about the movie version and Tyler said that Friends: The Movie is definitely on.

"I still keep in touch with a lot of the cast and they say that they are really keen ... I just hope we can do justice to the show in a film," said Tyler. Yes, he really used the word keen. Of course, if you were the guy who played Gunther, a minor character at best, the prospect of a big time movie would be pretty keen.

The bigger issue involves the stars. Would all six of them agree to do a feature, and if so, how much would it cost to get them to sign on the dotted line? Just a little over a year ago, on July 4, Warners vehemently denied that there was any truth to Friends: The Movie. Has something changed since then?

Umm ... not really, except that Courteney Cox is tied up with Cougar Town and Jennifer Aniston has made four films since then. As for the guys and Lisa Kudrow, they could fit a feature into their schedules.

So, I guess we'll see, at least until Warners shoots down the rumor again.

Aniston's made four movies? Which four are you counting? I'm seeing eight on iMDb, not counting the four in various stages of production.

Not sure if a Theater movie would work or not but a made for TV re-union movie for Thanksgiving would be perfect.

Git her done!

236 episodes--10 seasons' worth--of this dreck wasn't enough? Does EVERYTHING have to come back, no matter how pedestrian and worn out it already is? Are there REALLY people who need more stories with these characters?

The rumours started when James Michael Taylor was in the UK. He was here to promote a new Friends DVD, a 15th anniversary box-set edition. On the same trip, he opened a promotional 'Central Perk' in London and toured the TV studios. Now, call me cynical, but that they had a DVD to flog couldn't possibly be the reason for the resurfacing of the movie rumours, could it? The Warner PR machine was going full blast last week, it wouldn't surprise me if it this was part of it.
