Graham Norton gets in trouble for making gay joke

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 30th 2009 8:00PM
This may sound like an odd headline, since Norton is gay himself, so let's be specific: Graham Norton made a joke about lesbians and got in trouble for it.

He made the joke on his show recently (clip below, with guests Greg Kinnear and Ruth Jones), showing a picture from a web site that he said depicted "strange lesbians" with "bad haircuts." The BBC has told him and the show to stop endorsing stereotypes. You be the judge.

The Beeb's definitely taking this a smidge too seriously. But then, I guess they figure Graham needs a talking-to occasionally to keep him in line.

I do hope they run this episode on BBCA, as I'd hate to miss Ruth Jones over it.

RobynM,
They have aired this on BBCA months ago, and repeats of it also have been shown. I'm sure you will be able to catch it again.

i'm a lesbian and thought this was hilarious! Yes, it is a stereotype, but really it doesnt matter in the big picture. i think the BBC should lighten up :)

Beyond that, he is an equal opportunity slammer. He has slammed flamers numerous times for their over the top looks or behavior. ( and he flames like a bright little impish candle himself! so you KNOW those that he targets are way over the top.)

He is funny as hell and goes out of his way to see the obviously outrageous in life. And honestly that "woman" looked more mannish than needed to be.

Wouldn't it be funny though, it if turned out the model for his illustration was actually the guy's wife?

Oh please!

It's Graham Norton! This is tame for him! He's a comedian making a joke using stereotypes, he clearly doesn't mean anything offensive by it.
