Ask TV Squad: NYPD Blue, Miami Trauma and online shows

NYPD BlueThe "Ask TV Squad" column, published every Wednesday, answers your questions about current and past TV shows, as well as about the celebrities appearing on TV. Every week, I will pick a question (or more) sent to us and provide answers in the column. If your question is not picked for a column, it may be answered in a subsequent column. To submit questions to the "Ask TV Squad" column, you can post them below in comments or email them at asktvsquad@gmail.com.

This week, I answer questions about online TV shows, a new series called Miami Trauma, and NYPD Blue DVDs.

Q. Marmie asks "What TV shows will not be available online? On CBS, neither new episodes of The Big Bang Theory or Criminal Minds have been posted and on NBC, no Law & Order: SVU."

A. It would be too long a list if I were to mention all shows that will not be available online, especially if we include cable shows! That said, not all TV series offer their full episodes online. Reasons range from the network/producers wanting you to watch live, to wanting to have people buy the DVDs when they come out, and laws/restrictions/contract deals and other background politics we don't know about. Some networks offer full episodes as soon as a few hours after the episode aired while others wait a week or two before making new episodes available online. For some shows, you'll either be stuck with clips or nothing more than teasers for upcoming episodes.

I know it's not the answer you wanted -- I would love to have series such has Big Bang be online too. Maybe you could write to the network to let them know you want these series online? Know that you can also try to find online episodes on other websites such as SlashControl, Hulu, iTunes, and even YouTube!

Q. dcwdvl asks "While browsing Netflix, I noticed a DVD of a TV season due out in 2010 for a new show that I haven't heard much about. It's called Miami Trauma, and the executive producer is Jerry Bruckheimer, which sparked my interest. It seems like it is airing in Canada in Fall 09, and on CBS in 2010, but I can't find much information about the show other than that. Do you guys have any info?"

A. Miami Trauma is indeed a Bruckheimer show set to air on CBS sometime next year. According to a press release sent last May, the show is about "a team of expert surgeons who work at one of the premiere trauma facilities in the country, where only patients with life threatening injuries are treated." The show is set to start Jeremy Northam, Lana Parrilla, Elisabeth Harnois, and Omar Gooding. According to the IMDb page for the show, it is a US show that is shot on location in Florida.

I live in Canada and I haven't seen any teasers, ads, or commercials for the show as of yet. According to Wikipedia, the show is set to air on Canadian station CTV and the page, as Netflix also lists, says it will air this fall. However, when you check CTV.ca, there are no mentions of the show as of yet and their fall lineup press release doesn't list the series either. It wouldn't surprise me that, in the end, CTV airs the show at the same time it will on CBS.

Q. Susan asks "Are we EVER going to get more NYPD Blue on DVD? I've got the four seasons that they have put out, but come on!! It's been years since they released them. What's the hold up?"

A. The last season of the series released on DVD went in stores in June 2006, that is a long time ago indeed! "The TV Shows on DVD" website sadly doesn't have any info about upcoming releases.

Thanks the web search I've done to answer your question, I can tell you that you are not alone waiting and waiting and waiting for Season 5 to come out on DVD. Some fans wrote to Fox and got replies saying that they didn't have any information at this time and to write back in a few months! One fan thinks that the poor sales of Season 4 is what made Fox decide not to release Season 5. At least not now. Amazon does have a page up for NYPD Blue Season 5 but there is no mention of a release date. But Amazon having a page up like that doesn't ensure the DVD will come out, especially since they have pages for practically all later seasons of the show. Maybe it's time for a petition to be sent to Fox?

If you are really dying for Season 5 to 12 on DVD, you may want to look into DVDSelect.tv which supposedly sells a Seasons 1-12 boxset...

Let me know where that petition will be offered. I'll sign. I have the first four and would buy the rest, but particularly want season 5. I want to cry over and over again as Bobby Simone lay dying. DVD gods that be, please..........!

Regarding your comment about Miami Trauma set or filming on location in Florida. I wonder if it is going to be like the CSI franchises where they are set in one local but film in LA. As Miami Trauma was filming at the corner of Broadway and Linden in Long Beach, CA. in March

That last link looks like it's probably an unauthorized sale and could be illegal.
