Remember "Blinded by the Light"? Not the song, the sketch

by Danny Gallagher, posted Oct 12th 2009 7:08PM
For some reason, Showtime's original series have been attempting to reference every major song on the Billboard '70s and '80s rock chart in their episode titles. Last night's Dexter titled "Blinded by the Light" kept sticking in my head and then I remembered why.

Just as the Kids in the Hall were coming to a close in Canada, Lorne Michaels brought a lesser known comedy troupe called The Vacant Lot to the CBC and Comedy Central. It only lasted one season, but one of their very funny inaugural sketches "Blinded by the Light" got stuck in my brain. Thankfully YouTube is required to save every memory ever recorded, and that includes the Vacant Lot's sketches. Enjoy.

I remember first seeing this performed live on CBC's Just for Laughs.

My favorite Vacant Lot sketch was the song, "slept on his arms last night." If you don't know it, look it up on youtube and enjoy.

That was a very funny and perplexingly low resolution video!

I've found 'Pamper Me' and 'Knee Slap' on P2P networks. That's the only thing from Vacant Lot I can find...

My friends and I quote this sketch all the time, as well as some of their others. WTF happened to those guys? more importantly, why hasn't the series been made available on DVD? I feel like most sketch comedy shows are overrated, but this one seemed completely overlooked, and it was really fun.

Agreed. The show only lasted one series but it was deeply twisted and completely hilarious. The sketch where a guy gets caught smuggling by Mexican border patrol and instead of torturing him, they make him eat a massive bag of candy and turn a bunch of kids loose on him (human pinata!) had me in tears. DVD PLEASE.

I talked about this sketch as well as the Flock of Seagulls hair time machine sketch all the time. Finally had to track it down on youtube for my little sister who was too young to see it back then to see now. I also found a bunch of Mr Show and The State stuff (before the dvd was out) for her to see too. Kids these days they don't have what we used to!

Great Sketch glad to see someone else likes it too.
