Castle: Fool Me Once

Castle: Fool Me Once
(S02E04) "A con man isn't just about the money; it's about the game." - Castle

This week's episode of Castle continued the theme of a puzzling whodunit that takes viewers on a little journey to solve the crime. I was kept guessing the whole time, which is one reason I love Castle. The other, of course, is the lovely rat-a-tat banter between Castle and Beckett. Like a classic movie starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn.

And it's clear that Beckett is trying hard to hide her intrigue over Castle and his work -- making a date with herself to soak in a sudsy tub, drink wine and read his novel based on her. And then the end scene where he catches her in the bathroom looking for the steamy sex scene in the book. Oh my.

I really love it when I have no idea where the story is headed, as was the case with this episode. Once again, Castle reminds me of the old procedurals like Columbo and The Rockford Files. I really had no idea that the guy doing the North Pole expedition was a fraud. It looked so real! And they kept me guessing as to who was doing the conning throughout. I also appreciate how Castle "has a guy everywhere," and gets all giddy with the twisty-turny cases. Really, what did Beckett do before he came along?

Being a parent, though, I can understand Castle's concern over the violin teacher -- and there's no way I'd let a teacher of the opposite gender give lessons in my kid's room. Castle's response to that didn't seem all that outlandish to me, nor did him checking the teacher's credentials. That's just good parenting, in my mind. Castle's right. "It's a dangerous world out there, and people lie." You just never know who you're dealing with these days.

I love the references to movies -- Capricorn One, The Sting, Catch Me If You Can, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I'm still not really sure how Beckett stands on con movies, and whether she believes that "the only people who get conned in a con movie are the audience members ... you can't get invested in it, because nothing is real." If so, I totally disagree. That's the whole fun of the con. See, Castle agrees with me, too.

I'll leave you with this:

"Shut the front door!" - Beckett
"No time for dirty talk; go get changed." - Castle

Eldritch - Oh yeah, totally creepy that he was in the bathroom stall. What the heck...?! I'm guessing on his way out of the office, he saw her either eye the book or pick up the book, and he knew she'd be checking it out in the bathroom stall. At least, I hope that's what was going through his mind. Hard to tell with Castle.

"Oh yeah, totally creepy.."

I realize that this show isn't supposed to be realistic. It's light and fluffy and works because of Fillion's charm. (I've had trouble getting into Katic.) The show goes for the charm and the Joke. But I thought this scene crossed a line.

I'm guessing a man, probably a young one, wrote it. Are there even any women writers on this show?

"And then the end scene where he catches her in the bathroom looking for the steamy sex scene in the book. Oh my."

"Oh my" as in hot and sexy that he would hiding out in a woman's bathroom like a pervert ready to pop up and peek into the next stall? Lucky she was only hiding and not actually doing business there!

Am I the only one who thinks that it's creepy for Castle to be hiding in a stall in the women's bathroom?

I'd certainly like to know that as well.

All in all, a fun episode (even if the jokiness wasn't on par with last week's epic).

That "shut the front door" scene was the funniest thing ever.

I thought it was a fun episode, but one thing really annoyed me after it was over. They really didn't have a case against Sue for murder. They had a great case for fraud.

But as far as her murdering the victim, they don't have any connection with her and murder weapon, they can't place her at the scene, and they can't even identify who was killed to see if she had any connection to the victim.

I really enjoyed the show last night. I didn't know there was a real book though I had read that NF was signing books as Castle. Never made the connection. What I didn't like was the fact that the rich girl never changed her dress. She's rich and never changed, and it wasn't a
very pretty dress either.

The steamy sex scene really is on page 105. Nice touch.

Haha, thanks for mentioning that. I was wondering! I'm considering picking up the book (not just for the sex scene, hah) eventually.
