With cancellations, renewals and new lineups, fall is traditionally dominated by network television. But this season some of the biggest news has instead come from cable and this week is no exception, as Showtime has announced that award winning actor William H. Macy has been tapped to star in their new drama 'Shameless'. Macy, who was Oscar-nominated for his role as incompetent kidnapper Jerry Lundegaard in 'Fargo', will play an alcoholic father failing to deal with the recession in an an adaptation of the British series of the same name. Creator Paul Abbot will team with producer John Wells, who has been attempting to bring the show to America for half a decade, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
• Meanwhile, Starz has landed their own film star to anchor their new dramedy 'Gravity': Ving Rhames, who has appeared in such hits as 'Pulp Fiction' and the 'Mission: Impossible' series, will play Dogg McFee, a wheelchair bound former baseball player who heads a support group for suicide survivors. In addition, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Rhames will be joined in the cast by Krysten Ritter from 'Breaking Bad' as well as 'The Break-Up' co-star Ivan Sergei.
• Bravo also made headlines yesterday with the announcement of their new 'Work Out' spin-off 'Thintervention With Jackie Warner'. According to Variety, Warner, a personal trainer who starred in the fitness reality show 'Work Out' for three seasons, will work with overweight clients to help them create a healthier lifestyle.
• The networks weren't completely shut out, though; The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that ABC has given a greenlight to 'The Gates', a new drama about a big city cop who transfers to a seemingly tranquil gated community only to discover a seamy underbelly. 'The Gates', which is being produced by Fox as part of a new international strategy, is looking at overseas locations and will not begin production until the middle of next year.
