HBO booking a third season of In Treatment

In TreatmentIt looks like HBO is so in love with Gabriel Byrne's turn as Dr. Paul Weston that they're willing to go into uncharted territory with him. While the Isreali series BeTipul, on which it was based, only went two seasons, HBO has ordered a third round of In Treatment.

This is significant because the series remained incredibly faithful to the original series through both of its first two seasons. For this new third season, the writers will have to create all new patients, stories and drama for our beleaguered psychotherapist. Gabriel Byrne is already attached to continue his role, of course. It wouldn't be a show without him. I hope they can secure Dianne Wiest again as Paul's mentor and therapist, Gina.

I'm curious as to how they'll format the show, now that they're free to follow their own muses. I hope they stick to the five-days-a-week idea with one patient a day over a span of weeks. I'd also like to see a bit more of Paul's family than we did in the second season. But mostly, I just want more of those riveting sessions and the amazing acting we've seen.

The big question going into the third season is what kinds of patients he'll take on. So far we've seen Melissa George, Blair Underwood, Mia Wasikowska, Embeth Davidtz, Josh Charles, Hope Davis, Alison Pill, Aaron Shaw, Sherri Saum, Russell Hornsby and John Mahoney. If you aren't familiar with all of those names, trust me that they were all amazing on this show. Who would you like to see sitting on the couch?

John Mahoney and Dianne Wiest would be lovely for return characters. Since they are now let loose from the tight Israeli format it would be interesting to see Paul have a love interest with a woman his own age and someone a bit quirky, unusual and humorous--NOT a patient. The show wouldn't suffer if a bit of humor were injected and an out of office fling with a funny woman would give it a new twist.

I think it would be really cool to bring back Melissa George. Wow! What an actress. Dr. Weston needs some love in the third and perhaps final season. He is a Dr. after all I'm sure he can get his hands on Ativan for the anxiety and viagra to keep her up all night. I really liked their doomed love affair. It would be nice to see Paul finanlly happy and sated.
Gabriel Byrne is "IN TREATMENT" get him involved in a relationship. Love and pain and the whole enchilata.

S02 was absolutely some of the most riveting dramatic television in a long time.

John Mahoney was absolutely terrific as the CEO looking for a quick fix. Why he didn't get an Emmy nom still defies me.
