Susan Boyle's CD premiering on QVC

susan_boyle_singingOn November 24, British music sensation Susan Boyle's first CD will be released, and as I wrote before, it won't be filled with just show tunes. It's been getting a lot of buzz considering that Susan has not been going on television promoting the album... till now.

Susan will appear on QVC on November 4 to launch her debut album I Dreamed a Dream. If you tune in, you'll see Susan talking about the CD -- it doesn't sound like she'll be singing live -- but they'll spin some cuts and urge you to order.

If you do, there'll be a bonus DVD of rare footage that you'll get along with the eclectic batch of songs she's recorded. How eclectic? Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," The Monkees' "Daydream Believer," Madonna's "You'll See" and, of course, from Les Miserables, "I Dreamed A Dream."

Another song on the album is "Cry Me A River," a ballad that I know best as a Barbra Streisand song (although lots of other singers have done it). I bring up the Streisand connection because last month, in anticipation of Barbra's new CD, Love Is the Answer, being released, Sony did a QVC promotion just like this for Barbra. Richard Jay Alexander, who directed Streisand's 2006 concert tour, stepped in for Barbra and hawked the album and they included a bonus DVD of Streisand TV performances if you ordered.

The promotion must have been successful because the bottom line is that Streisand's CD debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200 and also was number one in the UK. You have to believe that the powers that be for Susan Boyle looked and that and said, "We'll follow her lead and go on QVC, too."

The exposure on QVC has also helped Clay Aiken and Barry Manilow in the past, so this is a logical launch point for MOR vocalists. Susan definitely fits that description, and I predict her CD will debut very high on the charts. I'm not sure I'll be buying it, but I might download a song or two from iTunes.
