Glee's "Don't Stop Believin'" goes gold

glee_group_foxIf you have any doubt about the power of television in the selling of music and making stars, this story should convince you that there is a definite correlation. Fox's Glee has produced a solid gold successful single.

The Glee version of "Don't Stop Believin'" has been certified as Gold in digital sales of half-a-million downloads. That's 500,000 people who've heard the song on the TV show and wanted it on their iPod or cell phone or some music playing apparatus.

"Don't Stop Believin'" was the first big song from the pilot, but it's not the only song that has been popular. Seven songs from Glee now occupy spots in the top 200 of iTunes' Top Songs chart. On November 3, there will be a compilation CD of the best numbers from the show, called Glee: The Music, Volume 1.

How much you want to bet that it's going to sell like crazy during the holiday buying season? I can see Fox marketing and Columbia Records hawking this as the perfect stocking stuffer (for those who still buy CDs) and online ads urging folks to download it for holiday parties.

Speaking of the soundtrack, it will include 17 songs. Here's the track listing:

1. "Don't Stop Believin'"
2. "Can't Fight This Feeling"
3. "Gold Digger"
4. "Take a Bow"
5. "Bust Your Windows"
6. "Taking Chances"
7. "Alone"
8. "Maybe This Time"
9. "Somebody to Love"
10. "Hate On Me"
11. "No Air"
12. "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
13. "Keep Holding On"
14. "Bust a Move"
15. "Sweet Caroline"
16. "Dancing with Myself"
17. "Defying Gravity"

If you're a Glee watcher like me, most of these titles are familiar ... except the last one. "Defying Gravity" is from the Broadway musical Wicked, at least the one I know. It would be perfect for Lea Michele, so I'm really curious to hear it.

What do you think of the Glee soundtrack? Will it be on your Christmas list?

Are you kidding? There's no way I can wait until Christmas for this CD! haha I'm going to buy it as soon as it comes out tomorrow. I had it on Amazon.com pre-order, but I decided I couldn't wait a week for shipping and cancelled the order so I could buy it in store! I've already downloaded almost all of those songs and then some, but I still want the actual CD (:

Actually, "Dancing with Myself" should be no familiar -- it, like "Defying Gravity" -- is featured in the upcoming "Wheels" episode. Artie sings it.

Defying Gravity is actually a duet between Rachel and Kurt.
On iTunes another track is listed, being "I Say a Little Prayer" which is the song Quinn sang for her audition that was never given a single release.
