Victor's Greatest Hits on The Young and the Restless

Eric_Braeden_Victor_mugshotIt's been a tumultuous six weeks for Eric Braeden and The Young and the Restless. For a while, it looked like he was on his way out of the soap when contract talks broke down between the star and Sony. Then there was a story in the trades about other actors being contacted to possibly replace him, including William Devane, Paul Michael Glaser and Peter Strauss. Before you could say Jabot Cosmetics, Bob posted the news that Eric and Sony had reached an agreement and Victor Newman would continue to be played by Eric Braeden. Crisis averted.

Well, while he was still in exit mode, the show wrote Victor out. In the storyline, Victor is recovering from a heart transplant and has decided to go to a clinic in Belgium to rehabilitate. This week he's been tying up loose ends before leaving.

Clearly, the show wanted viewers to feel some kind of closure. Therefore, Victor spent a good part of yesterday's show recording a video for his infant daughter Faith. He wanted the child to know about her father from his point of view, in case he was gone longer than expected. Or if the soap killed off Victor Newman off camera.

Well, Y&R yesterday was incredible. It was like Victor Newman's greatest hits. Every time he talked about his complicated relationships, they showed scenes from his long tenure on the show. Since so many of the same actors are still playing the same roles, there was no loss of continuity. It was amazing watching Eric Braeden through the years, when he was younger and thinner, but always with that mustache and that deep voice and imposing presence.

Here's a clip they showed part of on the show yesterday. It's Jack, played by Peter Bergman, and Victor going at it. They're business rivals and hate each other, in case you're not a Y&R watcher. The clip's fantastic.

Today is Friday, so I expect more of Victor's long goodbye. At least now we know he's going to be coming back, so we can watch without worry, just enjoyment.
