Review: Smallville - Crossfire

by Brad Trechak, posted Oct 31st 2009 12:03AM
Smallville(S09E06) Tonight's episode had everything but the metaphorical kitchen sink. There was a lot going on. We had the rather amusing attempt by Lois to score a morning show job, the start of Green Arrow finding his sidekick Speedy and a little more Tess/Zod action.

In all the years I've watched or read Superman in various forms, I've never seen him go on an online date. I would have enjoyed watching more of that, particularly with Lois whispering in his ear. Isn't it illegal to tape someone without their permission (unless you're the government)? What would Clark write on his profile anyway? " Can lift cars, run real fast and shoot lasers out of my eyes. No Kryptonite, please. Must love farm animals."

The episode was a mix of the movies Up Close and Personal with Lois and Clark and Pretty Woman with Oliver and Mia. I'm not sure what movie would qualify for the Tess vs Zod drama. Any suggestions?

"Leave the Kandorians to me" is a bit like Chloe saying "please let me die this season". But that's been hinted at before and never followed through. The producers would never kill off Chloe because she's the first person the fans would expect to die.
I don't really know what's going on with the Stuart Campbell character. Will he double-cross Chloe later? I certainly would suspect as much. It seems within his character given the company he keeps. He's the Smallville equivalent of Topher from Dollhouse.

There were a myriad of comic books references tonight. Let me present them in bullet points:
  • Mia - Green Arrow's sidekick Speedy in the comics. She started off as a hooker there too. I wonder if she'll be HIV positive like she was in the comic books.
  • R.A.O. - the name of Zod's corporation (whether it's fictitious or not) spells out the name of the Kryptonian equivalent of God. Is Zod religious?
  • Catherine Grant - she took over as the hostess of "Good Morning Metropolis". The same character appeared in Lois & Clark in the 90's played by Tracy Scoggins. Since they used a photo, I hope that means the character will appear later in the season. If she's as vacuous as her photo makes her out to be, it could be amusing to watch her and Lois interact.
I recognize that it's a familiar Smallville theme for people to just walk into offices as if nothing impeded them, but doesn't anybody in Metropolis have locks on the doors?

The show is improving and this episode is hopefully an indication of it. In the old days, the Lois/Clark/Oliver triangle would have played out for possibly the rest of the season rather than ending tonight. I'll say this about the Lois/Clark relationship: she wears the pants, just as with Lois & Clark. This show is quickly metamorphosing into Lois & Clark, and change is good.

And we haven't even gotten to the two-parter written by Geoff Johns yet.

I absolutley love this show! I'm glad Clark finally stepped up although we certainly don't want to see him go back to his love-whipped days. He is a much more interesting guy with Lois. He sassy, flirty and just delectable! Please give us season 10!

Who was taped without their knowledge? When Catherine sat down to have her date with Clark, A) The Cameras were right in front of her face, and B) She talked about being never having been on a TV show.

Oh, and yes, her name was Catherine. So, other than the picture at the end, there was a whole scene with the new host earlier in the episode.

Arguably the most trivial blog comment I will ever make, but since you asked "Isn't it illegal to tape someone without their permission?" the answer is "yes and no, it depends". In Kansas someone can tape any conversation they have with another person under the statute of "one-party consent" (i.e. since I'm involved in the conversation and I'm taping it, I give my consent and your consent isn't needed). For recording someone else's life/conversation/etc when I'm not involved in it (e.g. putting a wiretap on someone's phone to record their conversation with someone else, where I'm not involved and neither party knows I'm doing it) it IS illegal, but it's only a misdemeanor.

Even as fun as 1-8 was, season 9 is what we have been waiting for from the start. We all want him to put on red and blue and for him to fly. It's hard knowing the end of someone destiny, you just want to see them fulfill it.

The only movie that comes to my mind for Tess/Zod would be Kill Bill.

I'm never a fan of all the sappy stuff, but that scene where Clark stopped the bullets and then started blasting them out of the air with his heat vision was pretty sweet...

I can't comprehend if you were confused, the girl they hired for the morning show is the same one Clark blind dated...
