Ian McKellenFamed British stage and screen actor and Tony Award winner Ian McKellen is coming to the small screen, with a new series he hopes to bring to both the UK and U.S. markets later this year.

Variety reports that 'The Academy,' a half-hour mockumentary series, would showcase the actor playing his own fictional brother, "Murray McKellen," struggling to find funding for the also-imaginary Clapham Academy of Creative Arts. When a "documentary" on the school is proposed, McKellen's character sees a golden opportunity to save the dilapidated institution.

If given the go-ahead, 'The Academy,' a series very much under McKellen's watchful eye, would be written and directed by Peter Hinton and produced by Humphrey Barclay. The New York company DLT, which is no stranger to the UK market, would co-produce with England's 2act Productions.
DLT's Dan Taffner Jr. was in L.A. in late October talking to American networks. He admits that any deals will have to come together quickly as McKellen is needed on 'The Hobbit' set as early as March.
