Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio joins Law & Order: CIThere's plenty of fun news in today's casting roundup, with veteran stars of film and TV taking center stage on various shows.

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has signed up to join 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' for its upcoming ninth season. She'll play the new captain of the Major Case Squad, taking over for Capt. Danny Ross (Eric Bogosian), who ran the division for the past three years. The cast's other new addition is Saffron Burrows.

Along with Bogosian, leaving the show are regulars Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, and Julianne Nicholson, who's being replaced by Burrows.

Will the show take on a lighter tone? That's the word, with the action centering on Jeff Goldblum, who plays detective Zach Nichols. Personally, we can't wait to see the classy Mastrantonio, who's been a favorite since her 'Scarface' days, on this top cop show. Anthony Michael Hall• In a total casting coupe, Anthony Michael Hall will guest on the Christmas episode of 'Community.' It's fun insidery casting, since several jokes were made in the pilot about the quirky study group's similarities to 'The Breakfast Club.' The casting also re-pairs Hall and Chevy Chase, who worked together in the first 'Vacation' movie.

Hall, who played nerdy Brian Johnson in 'Breakfast,' won't be so wimpy in 'Community.' He'll play a bully named Mike who challenges Jeff (Joel McHale) to a fight. The cast recently shot a scene in which Mike interrupts a Spanish test and throws Jeff's test on the floor, while Senor Chang looks on with glee. Look for that episode to air Dec. 10.

Alison Brie (Annie) is as excited about it as we are: "We all freaked out when Hall's casting was announced. I blushed profusely. I couldn't help but let him know that I've been a big fan ... I always considered my character the Anthony Michael Hall of the group, because she's always the one doing the studying and she would be the one who would write the essay for the group. So for me to come face-to-face with him now -- it's a paradox that's happening. We're rocking the time-space continuum." [TV Guide]

Scott Foley• Will cougar Courteney Cox be shooting closer to her own age? Could be! Scott Foley will appear in three episodes of 'Cougar Town' as a businessman who's shown some houses by Cox's realtor Jules Cobb. Yep, there's plenty of connections here. Foley frequently guest starred on 'Scrubs,' the creation of Bill Lawrence, who also oversees 'Cougar Town.' Well, who knows if it's the real deal ... Foley could just be a stopover in Jules' inevitable journey to hook up with Grayson (Josh Hopkins). [The Ausiello Files]

Joanna GarciaJoanna Garcia will guest on 'How I Met Your Mother,' playing a possible conquest of Ted's (Josh Radnor) in an upcoming episode titled 'The Window.' Garcia will play Ted's college buddy, Maggie, the perfect girl next door who every guy wants to marry as soon as he meets her. In fact, she's always been in a relationship, so Ted's never had a chance with her -- until now. Look for that episode to air Dec. 7 at 8/7c on CBS. [TV Guide]

Rena SoferRena Sofer is joining 'NCIS' for a potentially recurring role as a no-nonsense lawyer with mysterious motives. While it's nice to see Sofer in any show, we think it'd be even nicer if she landed somewhere for a while. She's had recurring roles on '24' and 'Heroes.' You can also catch her in the upcoming film 'The New Daughter' starring opposite Kevin Costner. [The Hollywood Reporter]
