Golden Girls update: Betty White and Rue McClanahan make news

Betty_White_Rue_McClanahan_duoThere's some good news and some bad about The Golden Girls. First the good: Betty White will be returning to The Bold and the Beautiful to resume her recurring role as Stephanie's mother, Ann Douglas. She'll be appearing on a few episodes of B&B, but it could be extended even longer depending on storyline developments.

Sadly, the bad news is that Betty's Golden Girls costar, Rue McClanahan had to cancel a Castro Theater event in San Francisco on November 14 -- a salute in her honor called "Golden: A Gala Tribute to Rue McClanahan" -- because she's had to undergo heart bypass surgery in New York.

In a lovely Blanche Devereaux-sounding statement, Rue said, "My darlings, I'm just devastated that I am going to have to miss my own tribute. Unfortunately, my doctor has laid down the law, and I'm currently having some maintenance on the old ticker. Trust me, I'd much rather be in San Francisco having fun and being adored by all of you."

Over on the soap, Betty's returning to play a good character. Ann is a complicated, cranky woman. Nothing like Sue Ann Nevins or Rose Nylund. Ann's grown daughters Stephanie and Pam, Susan Flannery and Alley Mills, have been facing challenges in their lives in L.A. Stephanie has just suffered a minor stroke and has been afraid that it's going to slow her down. Pam, meanwhile, has made a splash on a fashion talk show called The Catwalk. Betty will be interferring in her daughters' lives.

Betty is a marvel the way she's remained so active. She was recently on 30 Rock, in the feature The Proposal with Sandra Bullock, and last summer appeared on Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List.

Get well soon, Rue; keep up the good work, Betty.

We lost a wonderful talent this year....Bea Arthur.

With all the wonderful things Miss Arthur has done in her life, wouldn't it be great to see her final interview, in HER OWN WORDS talking about her career etc.

I found this clip of Bea Arthur's final interview. The clip also shows Betty White, Carol Channing, and Phyllis Diller.

It says that LUNCING WITH A LEGEND is in development with Merv Griffin Productions, I'd hate for an full interview with Bea or the other legendary ladies in the clip to go unseen.

Cheers

I first disccovered Betty White long before she & TV made the sceen. She appeared on a disk jocky Radio show. "Al Jarvice's make believe ballroom". Station KMTR in Los Angeles. Then it was only her voice & name.
I'm wondering if she wants to be reminded of that time in her life?
Yes I am a big fan of hers.

My favorite Betty White moment is in the movie 'Lake Placid', that one where all the guys are hunting the giant Gator, where she goes
"Frankly, I'm rooting for the Alligator!" ;)

I like Rue very much but Im sorry, when I found out that so called animal loving betty white is holding billy captive to die in la zoo as gita did I AM APPALLED. Bob Barker set Ruby to sanctuary after Gita died horribly and now he fights with Betty over letting lone Billy out..he WILL /IS dying and going insane its sad she is such a supporter of great cruelty. She should use her money to help the animals not kill them. Shame on you dirty ol betty white not so white/pure and now I totally dislike her silly childlike act.

I never liked The Golden Girls show.
But I love Rue McClanahan and Betty White for all they've done. And Betty White is amazingly funny.

I am a huge fan of The Golden Girls. I DVR and watch all the episodes over and over again. Those four gals have been through every situation there could possible be in life, and they have done it with class and taste. Their humor has made me smile during my darkest times and I have cried with them during theirs. I have loved them all for many years. I know they must have millions of fans like me because it seems there is always an episode playing somewhere on my tv. Thank you Golden Girls.
