How Much TV Do You Watch a Day?

According to a new Nielsen study, Americans are wasting over 19 hours a day doing something other than watching television.

Admittedly we here at AOL TV are little biased towards the television side of things, but all joking aside, the latest figures from Nielsen are a bit of a surprise considering the amount of time people are now also spending online and pursuing alternate forms of entertainment such as video games.According to a new Nielsen study, Americans are wasting over 19 hours a day doing something other than watching television.

Admittedly we here at AOL TV are little biased towards the television side of things, but all joking aside, the latest figures from Nielsen are a bit of a surprise considering the amount of time people are now also spending online and pursuing alternate forms of entertainment such as video games.

According to the report, the average American spends four hours and 49 minutes a day watching television, while the average household as a whole clocks in with a whopping eight hours and 21 minutes of TV per day.

Despite the emergence of new media, these figures represent a surprising increase of 20 percent over viewership just ten years ago and are the highest figures ever recorded.

Add in time spent surfing the web, which The New York Times pegs at an hour a day, and it's clear that Americans are spending more and more of their free hours in front of a screen and less engaging in other pastimes.

So why are people watching more television? According to the report, "the continued increase in television consumption can be attributed to several factors including more television sets in the home, and Americans also have more channels and content to choose from and are using their DVRs more than ever."

All that adds up to good news for the networks and for Hollywood but bad news, perhaps, for our collective waistlines.
