by Scott Harris, posted Nov 17th 2009 2:00PM
You've heard of the 12 Days of Christmas and the Eight Days of Hanukkah. But are you ready for the Five Days of Vampires?

Yes, this holiday season you can expect your stocking to be stuffed with a swift bite to the neck, because The CW has announced via press release that they will be airing a 'Vampire Diaries' marathon. Starting on Monday, Dec. 14 and running through Friday, Dec. 18, the network will offer back-to-back episodes of the hit freshman thriller every night from 8 to 10PM.

For those of you wondering what the hype is all about, this is the perfect time to get yourself caught up on the story of of a girl who unwisely falls for a bloodsucking harbinger of the night. Based on the popular series of young adult novels by the same name, 'Vampire Diaries' has been one of The CW's strongest performers this year, averaging nearly four million viewers. You've heard of the 12 Days of Christmas and the Eight Days of Hanukkah. But are you ready for the Five Days of Vampires?

The CW's 'Vampire Diaries' is the coolest show on television (vampires are so in, in case you didn't know), and it's already built up a pretty substantial fan base over nine episodes. But while the show averages nearly four-million viewers every week (a healthy number, by CW standards), not everybody is watching.

This might explain the network's latest decision to run a 10-episode 'Vampire Diaries' marathon. Beginning Mon., Dec. 14 and running through Fri., Dec. 18, the CW will offer back-to-back episodes of the hit freshman thriller every night from 8 to 10PM.

For those of you wondering what the hype is all about, this is the perfect time to get yourself caught up on the story of of a girl who unwisely falls for a bloodsucking harbinger of the night. Need proof? Here are five reasons we think you'll love the show:

-- It has the best vampire on television: Sorry, fans of 'True Blood' hunk Bill Compton, but we can't get enough of Ian Somerhalder's morally precarious bloodsucker Damon Salvatore. In last week's episode, Damon said he was leaving Mystic Falls -- but we'll see about that. By now, the writers should know that 'Vampire Diaries' would be lost (ha) without Somerhalder's enticingly devilish ways.

-- 'True Blood'? Try true romance: We know that human-vampire relationships are all the rage these days (see: 'Twilight'), but the romance between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) is one that is both unique and believable. It doesn't hurt that Wesley and Dobrev have some of the best chemistry on television (we think they're overdue for a nickname; "Stelena," anyone?)

-- The deep, unspooling mythology will totally suck you in: 'Lost' isn't the only show on TV with a mysterious background to explore, as we're finding out as more and more is revealed about Stefan's doomed love Katherine and the shady events that led to him receiving the gift of immortality.

-- Damon and Stefan are the next Dean and Sam: We're not sure which is scarier: when Damon and Stefan fight, or when they actually work together. 'Supernatural' may be coming to an end, but with these two, The CW has ensured that they will control the market on hot brother combos for years to come. They even have the same initials!

-- There's way more to come: As if the announced guest role from geek queen Gina Torres isn't enough to look forward to, the series of novels boasts five volumes of story ready for adapting, with books six and seven on the way. In other words: The show is only getting started, so newbie fans will have plenty of upcoming stories to sink their teeth into.

With ten episodes slated to air, then, you'll be able to get nearly the entire 'Vampire Stories' tale to date, as the tenth episode is scheduled to premiere later this week. So don't miss out on your chance, because this is one series that actually lives up to the hype.
