The 'Sopranos' alumna is the latest star to join TNT's new drama 'Rizzoli.' The show is based on the series of popular mystery novels by Tess Gerritson.

Bracco is in good cast company. Angie Harmon from 'Law and Order' fame has been tapped to play the show's lead Boston Detective, Jane Rizzoli. Bracco will play her mother, Angela, who is described as a tough but loyal mother-of-three from Boston.

For those keeping score at home: Yes, Bracco is technically old enough to play Harmon's mother -- but just barely (she's 55; Harmon, meanwhile, is 37).

Bracco is best known for her roles as a psychiatrist Dr. Melfi on 'The Sopranos' and mob wife Karen Hill in the movie 'Goodfellas,' for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination in 1990.

TNT has found success in female leading shows, with both 'Saving Grace' and 'The Closer.' 'Rizzoli' will be borrow the talents of 'Closer' alum Michael M. Robin, who will direct the pilot.

Sound off: Are you excited to see Bracco's return to television?
