Now PETA is going after Sesame Street

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 17th 2009 3:30PM
Sesame StreetThey're incredible and they're edible, but eggs will also harm you. At least that's what PETA is saying.

People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals doesn't like the fact that the PBS show is being sponsored by The Egg Board. PETA's web site says that "Sesame Street is misleading children and parents into believing that eggs are a wholesome food when the truth is that eggs are linked to multiple serious health problems and that the egg industry horribly abuses animals." I think what they meant to say is that the industry horribly abuses animals in a simply delicious way, because scrambled eggs with just the right amount of salt and pepper are awesome.

This is a weird way for PETA to wish Sesame Street a happy 40th anniversary.

PETA - please moderation when eating eggs, chocolate, or anything.

PETA you guys jump ship and run in circles picking and choosing what to rip at.

You're not consistent!

I think PeTA is linked to multiple serious health problems (ask their "victims") and horribly abuses animals, i.e., such as the ones in the dumpster, and most surrendered at their facility, who are never adopted out, and euthanized.

Eggs are arguably the cruelest food on the planet. Male chicks are of no value to the egg industry and so are disposed of at the hatchery by being ground up alive or literally stuffed in garbage bags to suffocate under the weight of the other chicks or die of dehydration or exposure to the elements. You can see video footage at http://www.mercyforanimals.org/hatchery/.

The females have their beaks amputated with no pain relief, are crammed into a cage with 5-8 other birds in a filthy windowless shed where they live in the rain of urine and feces from birds caged in rows on top of them. They live their entire lives in a space no bigger than a sheet of copier paper; this is true of cage-free hens as well.

They live in what is essentially a filthy litterbox with the toxic ammonia fumes burning their eyes, lungs, and bodies.

At slaughter, their bones are extremely calcium deficient from producing an unnatural number of eggs, making their bones brittle and prone to breaking as they are violently grabbed and pulled out of their cages, thrown into transport trailers, dumped onto the floor of the slaughterhouse, and have their legs shoved into shackles. As they hang upside down, their heads go through an electric water bath which painfully paralyzes them. Next their necks are cut by a moving metal blade. Often they are still fully conscious as they are lowered head first into tanks of boiling water designed to remove their feathers.

And causing this extreme and horrific suffering is legal since poultry are exempt from federal humane slaughter laws.

Eggs are an extremely unhealthy food, full of saturated fat and cholesterol. An on-line search easily reveals many ways to replace eggs in any recipe.

Anyone who would defend the consumption of eggs is grossly uninformed and/or lacking any semblance of a conscience.

Many of us here at PETA grew up watching Sesame Street and now have children who enjoy the show just as much as we used to. We are concerned about the kinds of messages-and foods-that kids are exposed to. And it is with children's best interests at heart that we are taking Sesame Street to task for encouraging kids to eat eggs. We believe that those people who are angry with PETA for revealing the dangers and the cruelty inherent in eating eggs would do better to direct their anger at the egg industry, which profits from selling a food that causes a multitude of health problems for children and adults alike.

Eating just one egg for breakfast each morning can raise your cholesterol level by as much as 10 points. The human body makes all the cholesterol it needs for maintaining healthy nerves and cell membranes. The consumption of additional cholesterol through animal products can lead to clogged arteries and heart disease. By the age of 3, many children who follow the typical meat, egg, and milk-heavy Western diet are already developing the fatty deposits in their coronary arteries that can eventually lead to heart attacks. Furthermore, eggs are also a primary carrier of salmonella, which sickens more than a million people and kills more than 500 every year in the U.S. alone.

Plus, Children are inherently compassionate toward animals. If most kids knew how hens used by the egg industry have the tips of their beaks cut off with a hot blade and are packed so tightly together that they can't spread even one wing-they'd find eggs anything but "edible" or " incredible."

Lifelong eating habits are formed during childhood, and we shouldn't tolerate the egg industry peddling its products to our children any more than we tolerate cigarette companies' encouraging children to smoke. Instead, we should start kids on the road to a healthy, humane lifestyle by teaching them to make smart eating choices that will serve them throughout their lives. A healthy vegan diet, consisting of a variety of foods, provides all the nutrients that we need and is recommended by groups such as the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/index.html).

Wow. People need to remember the facts here: eggs are completely unhealthful products. A single egg packs in way more cholesterol than recommended for a day - why would we ever want to promote this to kids?

Maybe you don't like the messenger, but try to focus on the message.

Why would Sesame Street support the cruelty that eggs cause? 95% of eggs in the States come from battery caged hens. These hens don't even have enough room to turn around. These cages have already been banned in the EU and California.

I don't know what it is, but every time I see a PETA headline, it gives me the urge to run down to the local "Scotch and Sirloin" and imbibe on red meat and whiskey!

While I'm not a fan of PETA and their extremist ways, I do agree that the poultry industry is disgusting and tragic. There is no reason that our food supply can't be provided with a decent quality of life. Seriously, if you did a little research to see the filth (horrendous filth!) and mistreatment in the facilities where your food is coming from, you might see where PETA is coming from. I do think Sesame Street should reconsider using the support of the Egg Board, and lending the Sesame Street name to an industry that is so cruel. Look it up and see if you want to eat anything that comes out of one of these places.
