Review: Gossip Girl - The Last Days of Disco Stick

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Nov 17th 2009 1:42AM
Gossip Girl - Lady Gaga
(S03E10) "Vanessa, you are in love with Dan." - Olivia

Last week's threesome scenes left a few viewers wanting more. This week, viewers were not only treated to more footage from the threesome scenes, but to a lot of drama caused by said Olivia-Dan-Vanessa threesome experiment. As expected, the threesome made Dan and Vanessa's feelings for one another resurface, even if they didn't clearly admit it or deny it.

The episode also featured a guest performance by singer Lady Gaga (pictured above in a behind the scenes photo with Penn Badgley and Leighton Meester).

The Threesome Drama

For a November Sweeps episode, I was rather bored this week by Gossip Girl's episode. The drama following the threesome was put center stage, yet it fell flat. It was too predictable that Vanessa and Olivia would get into a "I'm better than you and I'll get Dan's attention" type of match and that the storyline wouldn't end in a fairy tale fashion.

Since Hilary Duff wasn't signed to be a regular this season, I expected her to leave the show this week or the next. However, I expected Vanessa and Dan to admit that they still had romantic feelings for one another. Even if they didn't admit it, I believe Olivia was right when saying that Vanessa loves Dan and that he has romantic feelings for Vanessa. But now that Vanessa seems interested in that guy who was in charge of the event, I now predict that Dan and Vanessa may give their romantic coupling another try during February Sweeps. No way the show will let the unspoken romantic feelings between the two not be addressed this season.

Trip and Serena

Another reason why I was bored by this week's episode was because of the lack of originality in Trip and Serena's storyline. We could smell the political sex scandal through the TV screen last week, and the stench got worse at the end of this week's episode.

Even if this storyline is predictable thus far, it'll be interesting to see how the news of still-married Trip having an affair with employee Serena comes out and how Nate, whose romantic feelings for Serena have resurfaced, will deal with the events.

Jenny

Mark your calendars GG fans because Chuck was the voice of reason this week when he told Jenny to stay miles away from Damien. But since the show is all about scandal and drama, it was obvious Jenny would not listen to Chuck and jump through the rabbit hole where excitement and danger awaits.

I wonder how her walk on the dark side will affect Jenny's status as Queen Bee. It could destroy her but it could also give her an extreme edge that will have her rule over her minions in rather evil ways. She may even use her minions to help her out with her affairs with Damien!

Lady Gaga

I'm not a huge fan of Lady Gaga, but I was entertained by her performance at the end of the episode. It was not only a good casting coup for November Sweeps, but somewhat helped highlight the last scenes. Oh, and it also offered us some tidbits about Cyrus Rose. I miss Blair's mother and Cyrus ... I hope they come back to the show soon, as they offered fun comic relief and helped highlight some of the other sides of Blair.

What did you think of this week's episode? Were you as bored as I was by the storylines? What did you think of Lady Gaga's guest appearance? Share your comments below.

Chuck has been the voice of reason THIS WHOLE SEASON. Crazy, isn't it? In fact he's acted more like family (parent and/or big brother) to Jenny than ANY of her own family (excluding Eric of course since he has tried to be there for her).

Love gaga and love seeing nate and serena getting closer. I've wanted those two together since the beginning of the first season!!
I'm surprised at how much I have liked the duffster's character olivia, even though I do not really like duff herself.
I think this episode nicely set up what is to come. The next episode looks pretty good!

I liked Lady Gaga's performance but the visual part was too short. I would have had a longer take from the beginning, have it fade out and continue the song - "Bad Romance" - as an appropriate theme playing in the background of closing scenes. (If Lady Gaga was really there, would anyone have been in dialogue while she was performing? I think not. I didn't seem realistic.) Gaga was a trooper, though, to perform as a visual background to a scene being played out. I read that the producers were impressed by her willingness to do that.
