Tim Matheson to Direct 'Jack and Dan'

Is the hidden hand of Aaron Sorkin behind the forthcoming Fox cop series 'Jack and Dan'? Maybe not, but the team Fox is building for the show certainly looks like a Sorkin alumni reunion.

Star Bradley Whitford and newly-hired director Tim Matheson (pictured, right) and co-star Diana-Maria Riva have all worked on Sorkin's 'The West Wing,' while Whitford and Riva went on to work on Sorkin's 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.'

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Matheson has been hired to direct 'Jack and Dan,' an hour-long series about a pair of mismatched Los Angeles cops. Whitford will play Dan, a lecherous, alcoholic burnout who remains on the force because of a long-ago act of heroism. His partner is young detective Jack (Colin Hanks), whose insistence on doing things by the book has all but stalled his career. Is the hidden hand of Aaron Sorkin behind the forthcoming Fox cop series 'Jack and Dan'? Matheson, who played the vice president on ' The West Wing,' (and who is still probably best remembered for playing Otter in 'Animal House' three decades ago), has directed episodes of USA's 'Burn Notice' and 'Covert Affairs,' another pilot. Certainly, USA's quirky crime procedurals seem like a template for 'Jack and Dan.'

The Reporter also notes the hiring of Riva to play Lt. Katherine Anderson, Jack and Dan's boss, and a former partner of Dan's. Riva had recurring roles on both 'West Wing' and 'Studio 60' both Sorkin shows in which Whitford had starring roles.

It seems that the only person on this show who doesn't have a direct connection to Sorkin is Colin Hanks. But Hanks' dad Tom starred in the Sorkin-scripted 'Charlie Wilson's War.' Does that count?
