James Franco Debuts On 'General Hospital': What Went Down (LIVE BLOG)

James FrancoAs we previously reported, James Franco made his big debut on 'General Hospital' this afternoon -- and we have the full scoop on what went down.

We already know that the movie star's run on the ABC soap opera is going to be loaded with surprises. For starters, although his debut was supposed to be today, regular 'GH' viewers noticed that the Golden Globe winner actually popped up on yesterday's episode (what would a soap be without twists?)

'GH' has done a great job of setting up Franco's introduction. From today's episode, we've gathered that his character, Franco, has photos of Claudia's dead body. Since A.J.'s Sonny's son Michael killed Claudia, the mobster is very interested in silencing the shutterbug/artist.

(note: all timestamps are EST)

3:00PM: Things are off to a really good start. Anyone who has tuned in to see Franco has gotten a glimpse of a half-naked Tyler Christopher, whose character Nikolas is almost caught making out with his half-brother's fiance. Smart move to show a little "man candy." Someone at 'GH' gets that the goal is to keep any new viewer who's watching just to see Franco.

3:01PM: Dominic, the undercover cop who's trying to bring down the mob, recaps to mobster Sonny (whom he doesn't know is his father) about the showdown with rival mobsters that they're off to. We're likely to get a little more exposition to bring the curious Franco fans up to speed.

3:02PM: Sonny's rivals shoo Franco's vagrant character away. We know it's Franco because his theme song -- Adam Lambert's 'Mad World' -- has begun to play. (Franco's got another audio trademark: shaking a spray can.)

3:06PM: More exposition. Magazine editor Kate Howard reminds assistant Maxie Jones that she needs to set up a photo shoot with Franco's character.

3:10PM: Tension mounts as Sonny and his "mob" of men show up for the shootout. Gun shots erupt. The camera cuts to Franco observing the whole thing.

3:15PM: Maxie and Kate walk in on Franco's studio. We know it's his studio because there's a big sign that says "Franco" on the wall (duh!). There's an outline of a dead boy on the floor. Maxie thinks it's "creepy." (We suspect Maxie will sing a different tune upon meeting Franco; wouldn't you?)

3:18PM: Gunfire continues. Sonny and company retreat. My theory that Franco would save the day by spray-painting everyone who wanted to kill Sonny and Jason proves not to be true. Oh well. Franco's now witnessed Sonny's life of violence firsthand.

3:26PM: Olivia just told Johnny that her cousin Connie (Kate) was "drunk off her ass" when Claudia overheard them talking about Olivia and Sonny's secret child. Can you say stuff like that in daytime? Apparently so. Maybe snagging Franco gave the writers special privileges.

3:28PM:
Franco's character assesses the scene of the shootout and positions a bloodied mobster as if he were about to give him a chiropractic adjustment. I'm no doctor, but that's not going to cure a gunshot wound. Franco utters the line: "Keep the change."

3:35PM: Lisa LoCicero's Olivia makes no apologies to ex-lover Johnny for keeping it a secret that her son is really an undercover cop. Soaps have always had mothers willing to do anything for their kids. (LoCicero's sensational, btw.)

James Franco3:37PM: Franco's shown from the back talking to someone who sounds British and could be his agent. We keep seeing him from behind. What's up with that? Memo to the directors: We get that you're building suspense, but Franco's got great cheekbones. Show 'em!

3:48PM: Dante's taken aback by Sonny sharing with him that he's not in love with being a mobster. It's going to be huge when it comes out that they're not only father and son but also mobster and cop.

3:50PM: Franco's agent (we think) has shown up and she's even sexier looking than she sounds on the phone.

3:52PM: Jason is obsessed with finding the vagrant (Franco) who was on the scene of the shootout, not knowing he's also connected to the photographs showing a dead Claudia.

3:54PM: We see Franco's face, freshly clean-shaven! Thank you! It's the best guest star close-up on 'GH' since Elizabeth Taylor showed up at Luke and Laura's wedding as curse-uttering Helena Cassadine!

3:55PM: Franco is off to his art show, which Sonny and Jason also are set to attend. Can't wait for Monday's episode.
