Family Guy's Quagmire puts Brian in his place

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 23rd 2009 3:36PM
Last night we had comedy done the wrong way (The Cleveland Show) and comedy done the right way on Family Guy. It also showed that Quagmire has some sense and a heart, as he unleashed a very effective rant on Brian (he doesn't like Brian and that view was only worsened earlier in the ep when Brian insulted Quagmire's sister). Here's the scene in its entirety.

Actually, Brian has alot less problems than Quagmire. Quagmire states that Brian is a "failure as a father" even though in the episode just before it Quagmire puts his own child up for adoption; Not realizing until later that it was the best thing he could ever do for the poor girl. Also he has a 20 year old kid in Spain and three sons all going to the same school. When Quagmire got offended when Brian was trying to flatter him about his abused sister, I found it stupid because in a previous episode Glen stated out loud to his mother that he would let her participate in a three-way with him. And in the same episode he drugged a girl and attempted to have sex with her unconscious body. Yeah, thats being REAL "honest" with women. Also telling Brian he was dumb for not knowing how to spell "definite" was foolish as well, because in the movie "Stewie Griffin the Untold Story" Quagmire misspelled the word Country on his Winnebago. The only thing Quagmire actually made a valid point about was Brian being a cynical, alcoholic, bimbo-dating, pot head. I personally don't like Quagmire or Brian anymore. I preferred them from back in the old days where Brian just sat in the background drinking and saying witty comments and Quagmire just made sexual jokes. They've both become way too involved in the series. *Breathes heavily* well see you guys later. Thanks for the F$%#@* steak.

Wrong -- it's reaching new heights if anything. Yeah on some episodes some jokes are off or played out, but there's still better humor/satire/slapstick than at the Simpsons or South Park for that matter - at least this show knows not to take itself too seriously...it's a cartoon comedy that usually doesn't get overly preachy in its intent, unlike the other shows.
If one really wants strong social commentary and analysis one can turn to PBS Frontline, 60 Minutes or some other public affairs channel...or read a book.

This episode SUCKED-- like the beginning of the end.

Ok, Quagmire:
1) Had sex with the wife of his best friend Cleveland
2) ALSO tries to have sex with Lois constantly
3) Had a woman chained up in his basement IN THIS EPISODE
4) Is a sex-slave trafficker of Asian women
5) Killed his wife to get rid of her
6) Also has a child, which he gave up for adoption
7) Is a sexual predator who spies on women and underage girls
8) has NEVER been shown doing volunteer-work

Meanwhile, Brian:
1) Became a police-officer to stop the drug-trade
2) Truly LOVES Lois
3) Married Lois during Peter's disappearance in order to support the family-- even though she wouldn't have sex with him ONCE, but just kept leading him on for over a year
4) has done volunteer-work
5) risked his life to save gay marriage

In short, Quagmire has NO ROOM to talk!

And for all the bad stuff Brian does: IT'S A CARTOON! It's called IRONY!!!
As in HUMOR!!!!
Yeah he craps on Peter's lawn-- HE'S A DOG! He also licks his balls! HELLO!!!

South Park once parodied itself by saying that "At least Family Guy doesn't get all preachy and up its own ass with messages."
Looks like they spoke too soon-- GF has officially "Jumped the Shark."

Oh yeah:
Quagmire also RAPED Marge Simpson and MURDERED her and her whole family.
I guess that's ok too, because he's "HONEST about it."
This series has hit ROCK BOTTOM.

Yeah, pretty much. I think Brian, despite his flaws, is actually one of the more likable characters of the bunch. Look at Peter, he's a (literally) borderline-retarded man-child who often acts like a selfish jerk and a spoiled baby towards his own family, and yet nobody ever calls him out on it. And Quagmire? A sexual predator, deviant and serial womanizer, he's a fine one to be lecturing anyone. Brian and Stewie are the best characters on the show IMO, Quagmire is a tired one-note gag by comparison.

I think the rant-scene was just a plot-device to air some of the h8 mail levied against Family Guy, especially the attitudes espoused by the Brian character (voiced by Seth himself). It was Seth giving a little back, showing that he can take it as well as he gives it. Cool.

...And is Jerome really going to become a regular, recurring character/drinking buddy to Peter? It felt like he wasn't just a one-off character by the episode's end.

Didn't Quagmire make a joke about having sex with his daughter when she's 18 just the previous week?

Douche.

That scene wasn't meant to be funny, but enlightening and, I found, depressing -- because there really was a heavy weight of truth to it about Brian (the character, as he has been written). I wonder if this episode means that MacFarlane plans to put Brian on a new path.

I'm sorry, this was still comedy done the wrong way.

Family Guy has become the worst show on the whole line-up (okay, it's neck and neck with Cleveland, but I finally jumped off that ship). The show is now painfully unfunny, a culmination of going down the drain for the past two seasons.

Maybe next week they can work in six or seven unfunny 'violence against women' jokes.

I love this scene. But the writers screwed up in another scene. When Stewie taks to Brian about Chris Farley, he talks about the scene where he falls down the hill in Tommy Boy. That scene was in Black Sheep.

Watching any other episode with Brian and Quagmire interacting, it pretty much seems as if this storyline was only done for this episode.
