'Desperate Housewives' Is Not Whacking Drea de Matteo -- For Now

by Gary Susman, posted Nov 24th 2009 11:50AM
Rest easy, Drea de Matteo fans. Rumors that her new 'Desperate Housewives' character is about to be whacked, Adriana-style, due to budget cuts surfaced over the weekend, but they are unfounded.

The Ausiello Files quotes a 'Housewives' insider as denying the report, which surfaced over the weekend in the National Enquirer, that de Matteo was being laid off just a few episodes after joining the show, and that her character, Angie Bolen, was due for an imminent Mob-style hit.

The Enquirer story, printed in the tabloid's Nov. 30 issue, claimed that de Matteo's Angie was about to sleep with the fishes, though the article contained some fishy numbers itself.Rest easy, Drea de Matteo fans.

30 issue, claimed that de Matteo's Angie was about to sleep with the fishes, though the article contained some fishy numbers itself.

It said that producers had decided to fire her over budget shortfalls after just five episodes on the show, but she's already appeared on all eight episodes this season. The Enquirer article, as summed up at PopCrunch, quoted an unnamed insider as saying that, although series creator Marc Cherry enjoys working with de Matteo, he couldn't afford to keep her. "She's the only non-diva on the set," the source is quoted as saying. "She's a breath of fresh air because she's so easy to work with. [Cherry] is torn because he likes her, but it's a business decision."

Ausiello's source, however, claims that there have been no changes in the terms of de Matteo's contract, which calls for her to appear in 20 of this season's 23 episodes.

Two things the Enquirer article said could be true. One is a quote from a 'Housewives' insider saying of de Matteo's Wisteria Lane newcomer, "They've decided to sacrifice her in a blockbuster storyline they hope will goose ratings."

The other is the source's assertion that Angie, whose family appears to be fugitives on the run (from some past crime? as part of the Witness Protection Program?), will get whacked like de Matteo's moll-turned-informant Adriana did on 'The Sopranos.' "There will be a big physical fight, and Angie will be rubbed out execution-style," the Enquirer source said.

We already know that three people will die when a plane crashes into a Wisteria Lane Christmas party on the Dec. 6 episode. Cherry told TV Guide last week that the three casualties would be a minor character, a central character, and a character who's been on the show since day one. "The fans are going to be sad over this one, but it was a good time to end this character's story line," Cherry told TV Guide, which speculates that the snuffed veteran will be either Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira) or Karl (Richard Burgi). De Matteo's Angie could still be one of the other characters, which would mean the denial given to Ausiello was misinformation meant to preserve spoilers.

If Ausiello is right, however, Angie will survive for at least a dozen more episodes. But she could still meet her demise next spring as the season finale approaches, and it's certainly plausible that her death could be a Mafia-style hit, just as the Enquirer describes.

De Matteo fans must be hoping, however, that Angie will stick around for a while on Wisteria Lane. During a season when the other Housewives have become mired in character ruts (brittle Bree, crazy Katherine, flaky Susan, grumpy Lynette, spoiled Gaby), de Matteo's blunt, no-nonsense, strong, streetwise Angie has been a breath of fresh air. It would be a shame to see her get taken out, whether it's 'Sopranos'-style or 'Lost'-style.
