Adam Lambert on 'The Early Show' (VIDEO): "I'm Not a Babysitter, I'm a Performer"

by Donald Deane, posted Nov 25th 2009 12:25PM
Adam Lambert didn't have to wait very long for a chance to speak out after his appearance this week on 'Good Morning America' was canceled because of his recent controversial performance on the 'American Music Awards.' 'The Early Show' quickly snagged the 'American Idol' contestant and featured an interview segment and several performances this morning.

Lambert claimed he had no idea his performance, which featured simulated oral sex and male-male kissing, would ignite the firestorm that it has. "I was really looking forward to it. I worked really with my dancers and my band for about two weeks putting that together," Lambert said. "I admit, I did get carried away, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I do see how people got offended, and that was not my intention. My intention was just to interpret the lyrics of my song and have a good time up there."

He also added that his x-rated moves were not calculated. 'Those kind of came from more of an impromptu place. Those were not rehearsed," he said.

The singer admits he can understand how parents might be upset by his risque performance. "I suppose I can understand why [parents] would be upset," he said, adding that the thought of children watching didn't even cross his mind. "You know, it was a nighttime show. I was there in the audience full of mostly adults."

However, Lambert doesn't feel he has a responsibility to issue an apology. "I'm not a babysitter," he said. "I'm a performer," arguing he thinks the recent controversy stems more from the fact he's a gay man, and that a similar performance by a woman would not likely raise eyebrows.
