More Big Love previews

big_love_poster_season_fourOver the weekend, the promo video from HBO's Big Love hit the web and we shared it here... wondering if that's all there is? The video was sort of metaphorical, but not very substantive. Today, however, there's some Big Love scoop to report, plus a new poster from HBO (right).

First, about the poster; yes, the family appears to be united. But is it just me or do Nikki and Margene's heads look weird? It could be the Photoshopping, but HBO is too slick for that. I think it's subliminal advertising. They're trying to convey that something is off with two of Bill's wives. Nikki has always been a headcase, but Margene? She's been so loyal and true and... normal!

However, when we last left Big Love, Margene's new jewelry business was taking off and she seemed likely to spread her wings and fly off a little.

But get this for some big news about Big Love, when the January 10, Season Four premiere airs, Bill will be running for State Senator. There were hints that Bill was going to get into politics, and it's all for love. Not ambition or power, Bill wants to promote polygamy.

Exec producer Mark V. Olsen told EW's Michael Ausiello, "His goal, if he's elected, is to put himself and his family out there as public polygamists. He can't be impeached for that. Polygamy is technically a misdemeanor in Utah, [and a misdemeanor is not] an impeachable offense."

Olsen went on to explain that the wives are not entirely thrilled with Bill's plan. And, thus, more conflict and tumult in the Hendrickson households.

I'm a close follower of the TV program, and as a resident of Utah, I know many polygamists and former polygamists. The program is quite true to the doctrines, practices, and issues surrounding Mormon Fundamentalism in Utah, albeit painting a much more glamorous picture of the lifestyle than the reality. The plot line about Bill running for office is problematic, however; despite Olsen's quote, it is bigamy that is a misdemeanor; but polygamy, as it is practiced by the "Hendricksons" is actually a felony (see Model Penal Code 230.1) and therefore technically an impeachable offense. Besides, while Utah's unofficial policy is to turn a blind eye to polygamy, an openly practicing polygamist would never get elected in Utah, because the non-polygamist mainline Mormon population would be loathe to cast a vote for one of their embarrassing fundamentalist "cousins."

There is a live call-in show in Utah dedicated to the subject of polygamy, called "Polygamy: What Love Is This?" It's been going on for a couple years, and all of its back episodes are available via streaming video (http://www.whatloveisthis.tv).

I so can't wait for this show to come back. I don't think Margene is very stable, for me Barb has always been the glue. Her only real weakness is her unwavering love for Bill, even at the cost of her own children's respect!

Your kidding right? Margie sane? She's always been the least stable of the bunch and from what is hinted at she loses it completely this season.
