Country Stars Who Act on TV

by Daniel Frankel, posted Dec 4th 2009 4:20PM
Singer Trace Adkins has been brought onto the cast of 'Tough Trade,' 'Nashville,' adding a little authenticity to the drama about a Nashville music dynasty currently under development by fledgling premium cable channel Epix, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Adkins, who has sold more than 10 million albums, has plenty of TV experience already, having been the runner-up on the first season of NBC's 'The Celebrity Apprentice.' He's also done guest spots on 'Yes, Dear' and 'King of the Hill.'

For his part, however, Adkins is only the latest country music performer to try his hand at TV acting, with trio Rascal Flatts signing on to appear on 'CSI' later this season.

In fact, TV executives on both coasts love the Flyover States cred that country music talent gives their networks, and they're always looking to put popular singers in series and movies.

Here are some other country performers who've taken the TV acting plunge:

Billy Ray Cyrus
Had played father to his real-life daughter Miley on the Disney Channel multi-platform hit 'Hannah Montana' since 2006. His guest spots have included everthing from failed UPN reboot 'The Love Boat: The Next Wave,' Canadian series 'Degrassi: The Next Generation' and 'Phineas and Ferb.'

Reba McEntire
Played a Southern soccer-mom version of herself in the eponymously titled sitcom that ran on the WB and CW from 2001-2007. Also starred in a series of TV movies for CBS back in the mid-to-late '90s.

LeAnn Rimes
Starred in one of Lifetime's Nora Roberts adaptations earlier this year, 'Northern Lights,' which was more notable for Rimes' home-wrecking on-set affair with co-star Eddie Cibrian than the limited number of women 25-54 that the cable network drew.

Taylor Swift
A rather high-profile guest star this year, having appeared in 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'CSI.' She's also been on 'Saturday Night Live' three times, even hosting the late-night show in November.

Randy Travis
A semi-regular on CBS' 'Touched By an Angel,' appearing in seven episodes, Travis also had guest roles in 'Matlock' and 'Frasier' during the 1990s.

Brad Paisley
Appeared in three episodes of 'According to Jim' from 2002-2003, playing two different roles. Also had guest spots on 'King of the Hill' and 'American Dreams.'

Naomi Judd
A well-traveled guest star, having appeared on 'Touched By an Angel,' 'Frasier' and '3rd Rock From the Sun.'

Wynonna Judd
Also did three episodes of 'Touched By an Angel,' was well as two episodes of ABC sitcom 'Hope & Faith.'

Dolly Parton
In recent years, country music legend -- who starred in the blockbuster feature comedy 'Nine to Five' in 1980 -- has done guest spots on 'Reba' and 'Hannah Montana,' playing "Aunt Dolly."
